I recieved my trial pack of itti bitti's the other day!!!
I now have 8 different type pockets and I have to say that the itti bittis are my fav already...... even tho I dont have a baby to put them on yet!
I think itti bittis are more likley to fit a newborn than a lot of the other pockets as they are teeny tiny where as some of the other small pockets seem huge!!

i dont know if you were liz..   i was thinking about that when i was reading thru it yesterday.

Nearly three years ago that was...my baby is now 3 yrs old and the other one is off to school this year!

I still like my prefolds, and fitteds, but my faves now would be designer bums, i just dont have any for eden. of course itti bitti's werent in the country when this thread was started...and some of the brands we talked about dont exist anymore...

Wow so much info to read up on, lots of good info I am up to page 8 lol.

I have brought a trial pack of Real Nappies, and I am looking for cheap tryouts on TM. That seems to be the best way to go, buy a few different brands and see which fits and works best with bub.

Cant wait for my trial pack to come so I can show DH what I keep going on about. Hi BT,

Microfibre and hemp are 2 types of absorbent inserts for the nappies. Microfibre draws moisture away quickly and hemp is slower yet holds more. It is a good idea to use the 2 together with the microfibre on the top layer (closest to the stay dry liner next to babys bum). Knowing what type and how many inserts you will need to use depends alot on the baby and how heavy they wet... It's probably a good idea to get an agent who sells nappies to visit you so then you can ask lots of Q's and get to see and touch the nappies and inserts before making a decision as to what you go for.

There are also inserts made of bamboo which are REALLY absorbent and super soft. Some places also make inserts that are a combination of hemp and microfibre so saves you using 2 inserts.

Hi BT... Most of the Fuzzis on TM are s/hand I think. I would recommend getting them via an agent in your area (there are a few agents on here who could look after you or point you in the right direction) because then you can make sure you have the right size etc for your bubs.

You can return the sposies you've bought, or my recommendation would be to almost use them up over the first 3-4 mos, by which time most babies will fit medium Fuzzis. Medium size fits much longer than smalls, generally speaking, so they work out heaps better value for money.

Inserts are the absorbent part of the FuzziBunz system. Boosters are basically half-length and half-width inserts. I'd say that most babies/toddlers any age are wearing (during the day) 1 insert and 1 booster together, for the added absorbency. Night times are anywhere between that and 3 inserts. (My 2yo and 4mo have 2 inserts and 1 booster at nights.) If you are planning to have more than one child, I'd actually recommend you get small size inserts instead of boosters. They are the same length as boosters but thicker, so you can use them as boosters but also as inserts for the small size if you decide to buy them for baby #2. That's what I've done but it was actually an accident lol

Im new to all this, due aug with my first..
Iv bought heaps of disposible nappies but have been on trade me tonight and seen fuzzi buns.. I want them.. Anyone know the best place to get them or is trade me the way to go?

Also this may sound stupid, but the booster and inserts, do you need both? and whats the differene between hemp? and microfibre? it says not to use microfibre booster without insert?? im confused!

My rationale with using cloth is that I so prefer it flushed away in the toilet and the nappy rinsed than a pooey sposie sitting in the bin.

(Though since I became aware of flushing poos from sposies as well, I feel a bit better. Not completely though. Hate the rubbish.)

i use prefolds and you dont need liners with them, i have some cloth liners that i use sometimes tho. some people use them for easier clean up, the flushable ones to me seemed to defeat the purpose of using lovely soft cloth next to bubs bum. and prefolds arent shaped, fitteds are and some have stay dry liners next to babys bum which can also repel pooh for clean up.

I uses "Real Nappies" (the brand) the covers are made by Bummis, and I just fold a flat nappy into it, although I do have a few of the real nappies prefolds, I find my flats work just as well,a nd dry faster. i use a liner, because it means, for me, that solid, stinky solid eaters waste is just flused away, istead of rinsed down a sink or whatever. Just my "quirk" though. I have a weak stomach....

Cloth nappies at night time, with a bit of trial and error, can be fantastic and better than sposies!

With the pocket nappies (like fuzzibunz etc) you do not need a liner as the microfleece in the pocket does that job. The pocket is made out of a waterproof fabric on the outside, microfleece on the inside, and then you stuff whatever you want in the middle to absorb all the wees. This can be a pre-made insert, microfibre and hemp are popular materials. Or you can just stuff it with a flat cotton nappy which you fold in to a pad (like the ones they used before 'Modern Cloth Nappies' - poor souls ).

If you are going to use nappies that need a liner, you can always get washable liners made out of microfleece. Those always appeal to me more than the other types... seems much more comfy on baby's bum. Others might be able to give you more advice on that one.

Other systems are using prefold nappies (which are flat squares (but more absorbant than flannel flats) which you use with a cover. These you do need a liner with.

There are also all-in-ones (AIO), which as the name suggests, are all in one no cover or liner needed with these. Well, if you add more padding you might need a liner, but I don't really know how these work.

These are the only systems I really know... anyone with any know-how will correct me or add more

Ok, I'm new to the cloth nappies thing but am going to give it a go due to us going down to one wage. So do you always have to use a nappy liner with cloth nappies?? You're right, though, how in the hell am I meant to get the folding and putting away done with a baby and toddler, E! channel and Oh Baby! There are only 24 hours in a day...
Liz, I would use the airing cupboard, as I have a large one, but it is already home to alot of, well, crap.

i'm trialing a new one size pocket at the moment too - it is a cheek boutique and instead of having snaps to adjust the rise you adjust the legs for a better fit. they are seriously cute and doing great so far.

I know that the nappiesa re expensive Ella, i got medium fuzzis for Taine and at nine months old tomorrow, he is still in them and will be for a while. i just thought i'd put this on here.
i went to a nelson baby expo on the weekend and there was a lady there who had designed and was selling cloth nappies alot like fuzzibunz but they are designed so that 1 nappy will fit from newborn all the way up to toddlers.
i thought this was fantastic as i was a bit iffy about buying one size and then having to go and get another size as mikeys still growing really fast and they really are quite a large lump sum.

it's really quite cool, the nappies have heaps of domes and you just put them together differently for different sizes.

i tried looking them up on the net but i can't seem to find them anywhere. they're called baby daze nappies if anyone else wants to try find them (not sure if that's one word or 2)

I do either - sometimes I put them in an old Huggies wipes container with water, or just wet them as I need them. What I meant was do you just get a cloth as you need it or do you have them all ready to go already. I know there is a mum who sells a bucket of cloth wipes, the theory being that you have the wipes in the bucket with water and they are ready when you need them...

I would like to be more organised like that but it kinda puts me off to havqe the water sitting round for a while?

I'm forever running around the house at nappy change time looking for flannels! Terrible system! Atleast now I have figured out that I should get the cloth BEFORE I take Han's nappy off and she runs away. Chances of getting her pinned down a second time are slim to none.

When I'm out I just usually chuck a whole lotta flannels in my bag... or if I am going somewhere I can't guarantee there will be a sink, I put a wet flannel in a glad bag.

And sorry for sounding like an idiot... with your question, what did you mean by 'pull them out as you go'? Pull them out of the great big pile of washing on the couch? Yes we have a toilet!
No laundry sink because basically we don't have a laundry. The house used to have one but when the previous owners made the downstairs enclosed with double garage they also gave it internal access which got rid of the laundry so to speak so the washing machine is basically in a little nook area in the hallway. Sarah... any sink will do! You can get fittings that attach to taps as well so you could just hose it straight into the toilet? Nikki - Maya's daycare claimed they didn't do cloth either but I turned up on the first day with a stack of cloths prefolded (I used the splain squares) with liners and a bucket with a lid, and left them to it. All they had to do was chuck the liner in the bin they used for the disposables, and chuck the dirty nappy in the bucket (lined with a plastic bag) and at the end of the day I would grab the whole plastic bag and take them home. If my Hannah has done massive poos (very rarely) then I give it a quick rinse in laundry, otherwise I just chuck any pooey ones through a rinse cycle first, then I usually wash them with all her other clthes. Any stains come out in the sun, but once every week or 2, i give them all a soak and a hot wash. And every month or so wash with vinegar and baking soda. Sounds complicated but really it isnt.

If the babe has done poos (this is speaking from a 10 month old+ as I didn't do a newborn in cloth) you just empty it in the toilet and wash off the rest under the laundry sink and then throw it in. Sarah, where abouts do you live? Do you already have daycare booked? There is a list of daycares that will use cloth nappies on the nappy network but I can paste them here if you want. When you go to book in at the daycare ask about whether they can use cloth nappies even if it says in their brochure disposables only. also let them know it isnt traditional ones they have to fold - all theyd have to do is put them in a plastic bag or something for you, no need to rinse either.

If you go with fuzzibunz, all you need to buy as well are microfibre inserts to go inside them (they are the absorbant part of the nappy). The inner microfleece layer keeps babys bum dry and the outer is waterproof. Hope that helps. OK, so I am thinking about using fuzzibunz once we have a baby. My question is this, I will be going back to work and our baby will be a day care bubs, can you still use them, IE I don't want to lose my expensive naps to someone else! Also what do you need to purchase for them? Hmmm, good point about finding out more about them while preggy. I think I said in another post I was looking at becoming a Fuzzi Bunz agent - getting info to ladies while they are preggy is probably better than waiting until bubs has arrived....
