Then a strip with vinegar and baking soda (hot wash with 1/2c vinegar, rinse with 1/2 cup of baking soda, then another rinse) to keep them smelling nice. Also put a few drops of tea tree oil in the rinse now and again as it smelled nice (? Debatable!) and is a natural anti-bacterial/anti-fungal oily type business.

Baking soda and vinegar neutralise each other, so don't mix them together as they need to work individually.

I cold wash everything, with Persil, and haven't had any problems so far that were not caused by my son being helpful and putting an extra scoop of washing powder into the machine halfway through a wash cycle!

You could try putting your nappies through a water only wash, and see if there is a lot of bubbles in the wastewater (that would indicate powder buildup on the nappies). For a baking soda and vinegar wash, I put the baking soda in instead of washing powder, and vinegar in instead of fabric softener (not that I use fabric softener, its just that part of the machine that I put the vinegar into). I use about 1/4 cup baking soda and about 1/2 cup vinegar, and do an extra rinse at the end with nothing extra at all.
