Cold water isn't bad for your nappies, but I personally found that it didn't clean them quite as well as hot. So I used to wash on cold most of the time and then do a hot wash once every week or couple of weeks. Then a strip with vinegar and baking soda (hot wash with 1/2c vinegar, rinse with 1/2 cup of baking soda, then another rinse) to keep them smelling nice. Also put a few drops of tea tree oil in the rinse now and again as it smelled nice (? Debatable!) and is a natural anti-bacterial/anti-fungal oily type business.

I just use ecostore, also I thought it wasn't good to wash them on cold? I don't use anything and mine still smell fresh. We always try to hang them outside though so the sunshine might be keeping them fresh.

I've been using dettol as my inserts started to smell and that did the trick.

I love Dettol laundry rinse. It might be the cold power... its one of a group of brands that tend to not be the best for MCN. I cold wash everything, with Persil, and haven't had any problems so far that were not caused by my son being helpful and putting an extra scoop of washing powder into the machine halfway through a wash cycle!

You could try putting your nappies through a water only wash, and see if there is a lot of bubbles in the wastewater (that would indicate powder buildup on the nappies). For a baking soda and vinegar wash, I put the baking soda in instead of washing powder, and vinegar in instead of fabric softener (not that I use fabric softener, its just that part of the machine that I put the vinegar into). i use to have stinky nappy problem with Astins nappies so i started putting detol through the wash with them and it made a HUGE difference!!!! they all smell fresh and sanitised all the time!!!!....well until he wears them! lol
