Same here... but to get out of LHutt Hospital that quickly. Sadly DS didn't want to feed. We ended up agreeing to bottle feed him to get us out of that place 2 days later. Suffice to say, we're never going back.

I saw an article about this the other day, and one of the incentives they've had over the years was in Aukland a while back, and they'd give home birth mummies the money/stuff too. lol. I'd be tempted to go home early if I had say 2-hours per day home help the first few days, up to a week. Not a chance. When I had Ella I need the extra time (3 days) to recover away from home, learn to breastfeed and get a little bit of confidence about how to look after her.

And that is why I am plannig another home birth although to be honest if thry offered the 100 here I would have baby in hospitsl then leave just for the money. I had 8 days with Tom and like yummymummy I was itching to get home but on the other hand so pleased that everything was going well with Tom. My milk had come in, I'd got through the massive engorged concrete filled boobs with a mind of their own and we were really settling in to breastfeeding. Tom and I were getting comfy with each other. I cant imagine what it would have been like to go home after 48 hours!!! We were in hospital for 10 days with Gina and even though I didn't enjoy it, I was glad to be with my baby and did not want to leave until she was given a clean bill of health. What this should be saying is that the government needs to be stepping up and making sure we have the midwifes and the beds and the professionals to cater to and for the mums out there who are having new zealands babies...

Every day we hear about the shortage of mw's and the lack of space and the lack of skilled people in this industry and it needs to stop.

Its stories like theses that make me want to recondsider what I want to do. I picked the midwifery books up from Massey yesterday only to find out Midwifery is now only based out of Wellington .

There is no way a $100 voucher would make me want to leave early. I told the hospital that I was staying till Friday when I had Josh (he was born Wed evening) as last time I had BF issues and he needed his hips checked.

Yep that's what I understand too.

Also it's just the vouchers that have been scrapped. They're still going to get as many women to leave the hospital as quickly as possible.

I seriously doubt things will improve after Jan either. My midwife told me yesterday that the hospital was closing beds for Dec / Jan and it would be unlikely that they would be opened after that due to the shortages.

I understand that if you are a first-time mum, have a c/s, or complications arise either throughout the birth or in the 6 hours following, then you are not asked to leave as soon as otherwise would be the case.

I saw the headlines of this and was NOT impressed!!! It discriminates against people who do need the extra time (e.g. c/s, complicated birth or lack of support at home) and it puts extra pressure on money-pressed families to get home quicker. Vouchers for new mums scrapped

Capital and Coast District Health Board has backed down on its plan to offer mothers $100 supermarket vouchers to leave hospital within six hours of giving birth.

Board chief executive Margot Mains said mothers would still be encouraged to go home directly from the delivery suite, without being admitted to a post-natal ward, if mother and baby were clinically safe.

But she had reversed a decision to offer the women $100 supermarket voucher to do so.

The hospital came up with the strategy to cover the period from December to January, to deal with a serious shortage of midwives in the region.
