i'm with ya fleury!   five flax is nice, i like the bubbly and cab sav.....i also quite like timara.

I generally have a bottle (or 2) as well in with the shopping, and generally dont spend more than 8 or so either.
five flax is a really nice riesling. (think thats what its called)

i love wine!!!!!!!!   

but you guys have expensive tastes, or am i just cheap i get a bottle (or 2) with the groceries and i hardly ever pay over $8.

i love reds whites and bubblies, chardies, cab savs/merlot and bruts are my faves. my all time faves are stoneleigh and villa maria. i also like montana, riverstone, jacobs creek bubbly, hardys (yes you heard me! ), lindaur (sp?)

I seem to like the Australian wines more than NZ ones and they don't seem to put that preservative in their wines like the NZ companies. My favourite cheap one is Banrock Station, I rate most of their wines, but particularly like their White Shiraz. I went on a winery tour in Melbourne and loved the Domaine Chandon Cuvee Riche (at about $40 a bottle!) Don't know if you can get that in NZ...?

I once went on a mission to try and find that real bargain...you know the one..costs $7 but tastes like a $50 bottle.....all i learnt was you have to drink a lot of bad wine

My DH is a viticulturist so I get to try lots of yummy wines too. In fact our wee boy was conceived on our tour of european wine areas. eeeek i dont know a thing about wine!! Iv only tried one once when i was like 15.. it was gross.. altho it was like $9 a bottl and i was young lol.

I wouldnt even know what all these fancy names are.. maybe a should try a wine.. i really cant stand red.. the smell makes me wanna puke.. maybe that was cheap too.. hmmm i dunno!

I'm not much of a Wine Drinker but like Pinot Gris, Fejoa Wine from Lothloriens (sp) Rubydooby will know what I'm talking about also Asti Riccodona and some Rieslings can't stand red wine although did try one once and liked it but can't remember the name of it.

Ooohh might take you up on that offer next year. Didnt realise it was so soon this year and its the week after i start my new job so think im going to be shattered that weekend but am definately coming up this weekend.

Does anyone know where i can get a Fromm Reisling? We had it on my wine course but cant find it anywhere.
Oh and another thing, if anyone knows where i can buy a wine journal. I found one on trade me a while ago but it was ugly and thought i would just go to the bookshop and get one but havent been able to find one anywhere either.

The BEST BEST BEST Pinot Gris is a Framingham one, they also do wicked good Rieslings as well......mmmhhhmmmm

Wine and food festival is an awesome awesome awesome day, and I totally reccomend it. If any of you tarts want to some over for next years one, I'll come and show ya around... we could make it an OH Baby event...

Charly that would be awesome, having a hubby who makes it. I found the details of the making fasinating. it amazes me how many things can change the taste of the wine. it would take forever to learn it all. the tutor who took our course owns (with her husband) Darjon Vineyard here in chch and it was just so cool to talk to her about everything. DH is a wine maker, so he's been educating me over the last 7 years about wine.
I'm not sure who said it earlier (too lazy to scroll back) but you do quickly learn the cheapies aren't always that flash, so you do end up getting an expensive taste for wine which can be a drain on the old bank account at times
However, there are often some great bargains at New World.

and mmmm champagne.... DH and I splashed out on a bottle of Veuve Cliquot for our honeymoon. SO good. And we had a bottle of Piper Heidseik on xmas morning (I had 3 mouthfuls) which was yummy too.

I went to a housewarming a few weeks ago and for the first time drunk red wine. It was a sweet one which I thought was a bit strange for red wine.

I have a terrible addiction to french champagne (from my time living in London and working in a job with quite a lot of flash events, and a lot of drinking/eating out). It wasnt so bad over there - but here its not that affordable! (Luckily I shipped about 10bottles back - have been rationing it!)

My favourite is Veuve Cliquot, although I am also partial to Bollinger. I was lucky enough to me "taken out" by my old boss in London and he bought 2 bottle of Cristal, at 250pounds each!!! Yikes!! It was quite a night!!!

problem is its not a cheap hobby. once you start getting into it you realise how the cheap wines really arent that flash and why they are so cheap!

Ive just done a wine course at our local high school and it was awesome. we did it cos we wanted something to do together (me and hubby) and i dont really drink wine and know nothing about it so wanted to learn a bit so i didnt look like such a wally when we went to a restuarant. We now love it, so much fun and so much to learn though. this year we are going to do the stage two course which is all about making wine.
Im a sweet wine drinker though, love sweet reislings like Main Divide and Camshorn also getting into the Pinot Gris, Stoneleigh do a really nice one.
We are lucky cos we get wine cheap through hubbys work but end up spending heaps. I would also totally recommend Micheal Coopers wine guide. Its a great reference book with heaps of nz wines.

Another mission next year is to try wines from all over NZ. I've been a big Oz wine drinker (funny that) but now I think I need to try wines from here.

I used to work at a winery and so did one of my flatmates (and the other owned a bar, lol) so we would have loads of staff priced wine at home. well, never for long, anyhow. My flattie worked for Le Brun, which is how I got onto the dearer stuff. Anyone else a wine drinker?

I love bubbly and chardy. Never been a big NZ chardy drinker till I opened a bottle I got for my birthday and it is now my fav nz wine. Ngatarawa Stables in the Hawkes Bay.

My mission next year is to try and get to the winery and get a few bottle cheaply.
