I used to do my work during her late afternoon nap so it'll take some getting used to. I think I will have to take her out every morning (I like quiet mornings at home) as otherwise she won't last until 11.30. Last night she slept through without playin so the one nap seems to work well for that.

They usually still turn a bit feral around 5pm when I'm getting dinner ready but then dinner and bath distract them and they last until bottle and bed around 6.30pm.

If you want to try transitioning IMO the best way to start is to try and push that morning nap back a bit so that eventually she is staying up longer in the morning. You'll prob have a few days of grouchiness as she settles into the new routine but it will pass.

(No arvo sleep) Be aware that she may nap every second day while she gets into routine. Another idea for afternoons is to put her in her bedroom for a "rest" (only) with a couple of books - just as quiet time with no intention of sleep - and get her out after 20-30 mins. Although from what I know of your Elle, I'm not sure if she'd go along with that too easily

I'm convinced that her night waking etc is because she either has (a) too much sleep during the day (days when she has 2 naps) or not enough (days when she does her morning nap but not an afternoon one).

I'm trying really really hard to increase her morning awake time but the longest she can stay up is 3.5 hours and usually it's only 3. That means her first nap is at 10 or 10.30 until 12 or 12.30 and by bedtime she is overtired and has an unsettled night. If I offer a catnap in the afternoon and she takes it she is not tired enough.

That's what worked for us. and now she's older she sticks with the afternoon sleep - goes down between 12.30 - 1, wakes 1.5 - 2 hrs later and still goes to bed at 7.

Our routine is:

6.30/7am wake/get up
7.30 breakfast
10.30 morning tea
11.00 nap for approx 2 hours
1.00ish lunch
3/3.30 afternoon tea
5.00 dinner
6.30 bath, bottle
7.00 bed

I would also see if you can gradually stretch out her awake time in the morning. Ashleigh was quite similar with not being able to stay up long and even now, could probably go to bed earlier if I let her but still wouldn't sleep in the arvo. I have tried giving her lunch first about 11.30 then bed but she is normally too tired to eat. I have found giving her morning tea about half an hour before bed keeps her occupied and fills her tummy a little so she can get through til she has her lunch after her nap.

Eta: just added dinner in as I missed it out!

Edited by KH25

Even if it is just 10-20 minutes per day over a couple of weeks so that she is eventually used to staying awake longer in the mornings and napping in the early afternoon for one long period.
If you can arrange to do some interesting things to keep her stimulated in the mornings (but not too stimulated so that she gets really worn out and it backfires the next day) it might help with keeping her awake a bit longer.

I hope this helps, good luck Fiona!

    Author: FionaS
Subject: 13597
Posted: 14 January 2008 at 10:49am

How many naps does your (approx) 16 month old have?

If possible, could you post your routine?

UP until 2 weeks ago, Elle was having 3.5 to 4 hours of nap time, spread over 2 naps. I think Elle she now needs less but the transition is not happening well so we have a big mess each day and then night wakings from overtiredness so I want to consider "manipulating" her routine a bit to see if we can get things back on track.

Essentially she is refusing her afternoon nap BUT she can't not stay up any longer than 3 hours first thing so we can't do 1 nap. She still seems to need 2 naps...if she doesn't have them the last hour or 2 of the day are all tears. I think perhaps I need to shorten her morning nap to 1 hour and then hopefully she'll go back to her longer afternoon nap.

Current routine
6.30 awake
7am up
10am nap
11.40 or 12noon awake
3.30pm...exhausted..try nap...won't sleep...just plays for an hour or more then gets up and is too tired to eat or play so goes to bed at about 6.30 with an empty tummy.
Doesn't call us in the night but is awake a lot as a result of overtiredness during the day.

She used to nap 3pm tp 5pm then go to bed happily at 7pm. This has suddenly changed.
