my absolute favourite birthing book is a new childbirth by Emma Wright. It is a bit old so has a few things that aren't relevant but the whole breathing and birth part is amazing.

I found babies by Christopher Green pretty average. I have Confident Baby Care by Jo Frost (aka super nanny) and love it. Great book for the first year.

Broken into 3 month stages and has suggestions of activites and things to do with bubs as well as great ideas on routines, bottle feeding, wrapping etc.

Anything by Christopher Green, Penelope Leach and Dr Miriam Stoppard are good value, I have copies of several of their books and I still refer to them even now after 3 kids. Christopher Green is an absolute legend.

I didn't rate Oh Baby by Kathy Fray, but that may be biased as I don't rate her much, IMO she's a media whore (excuse the phrase) and the book was condescending and no better than a heap of other birth/baby books.

Stupid books - I think they caused me more harm than good! If I had my time over again I would go with one that is more of a reference book (e.g what is that rash etc) than one that tells you about routines etc.

In saying that, my favourite is "Your baby week by week" - it's English, and says things like "you might like to try to do xxx now, but if it doesn't work don't worry try again in a few weeks". I like The Baby Whisperer as well by Tracy Hogg and i just got given the Babies one(the Plunket nurse recommended it as a fun book) ..supposed to be good.. and I like The User's guide to the NZ baby by Nicola Miller-Clendon...


i never got books till after i had him..i totally should have earlier:) just couldnt think past the birth.. :)

complete baby and childcare by Dr Miriam Stoppard. This book is fab, lots of pics and covers all the basics, has case studies and a medical part at the back. Covers from Newborn to 5 years. Pretty much anything you want to know is in this book. I also love that it isn't preachy and she offers a range of options and also talks about her own experiences as a parent.

The other book I quite like is Kid Wrangling by Kaz Cooke, I had her pregnancy book so thought would be her baby/child one as well. Its ok but there are no pictures and she is quite opinionated about some things.
