It's not really about the different partners tho in this instance, you can just as easily fall pregnant with the SAME partner if you are slack about contraception, altho I guess the difference there is that if you are in a relationship and find yourself unexpectedly pregnant there are a different set of considerations to if you are single.

I'm in favour too - there are always going to be people who use it as a form of birth control whether they have to pay for it or not, but by making it available free of charge they are increasing the number of people who potentially have access to it, and that includes the majority of the population who don't see it as a license to be promiscous. If it prevents just one unwanted pregnancy then IMO that makes it worthwhile - I have seen far too many neglected and damaged children who's parents simply didn't even want them to start with.
My sister has a friend who has had 6 terminations. Now that says a lot about her character in itself, but had the ECP been more readily available to her she might not have ended up in that situation in the first place.

Yeah the problem is that there won't be a national record as such, people can go to several pharmacies and lie about who they are and when they last took and there are no checks in place for that...just like now.

My big concern is how many will use it for contraception and if it will impact on unprotected sex, ie will it increase? I think it's a great idea. A lot of the reaction to it (don't mean here!) seems to focus around it encouraging teenage promiscurity - it's not just teenagers who have "accidents" - I've needed it several times in the 10 years I've been with my DH. I do think if they're going to make it more freely available they're going to need to give pharmacists better training around the information they need to give out with it and the questions they need to ask.
In my slapper days I got it quite a few times after drunken slip-ups and was never once warned about taking it within 6 months of having had it. I wound up at a&e with heavy bleeding and cramping mid-cycle and they put it down to that.

ETA: This was from several different pharmacies too, I didn't like going back to the same one everytime. Maybe if I had they would have refused to give it to me.

I wish it wasn't just up there! I think it's an awesome idea! I don't think its going to encourage girls to go out and have unprotected sex just cause they know its more freely available now.

When I had to get it last month I got a 10 minute "interview" with the pharmist and I got specifically asked if I had taken it within the last 6 months and told various reasons why you should not take it more than once within 6 months. I don't imagine they will stop advising people of this sort of thing. Plus your name and address etc is recorded when you get it.

I think it's a great idea! I certainly don't think it's going to make young girls have unsafe sex just because they can get the ECP. From experience they certainly don't make it easy for you to get, there are alot of questions you have to answer before they even make the decision to give it to you.

Its the 21st century, and I'm glad that they are going to make it available for free too.

I think it is a good idea, as long as there is education that goes with it. I did read there was talk of as well as the pill you got condoms to take away with you as well which I think is good. I don't like it. I had a number of friends at school use it as a form of contraception and for some of them it didn't work and they ended up with a baby.

One thing they should do is that they have to provide photo ID to get it.

Yep i agree people do use it as contraception but at least they use contraception, you just need ot look at teeneage pregnancy rates to see that that message doesn't get accross, (no offence intended to the young mums on here at all). Make it available to those who want to use it, but also the message on safe sex (talking STI and unplanned pregnancy) needs to be made stronger too.

I think it has some huge pros eg: reducing the number of unplanned pregnancies, but there's the risk of girls using it as a contraceptive too....
