I'm another one to jump in the night waking boat!!....and because I desperately need my sleep!! I usually just pluck him out of the cot and put him into our bed.....even though my partner seems to think he's got insomnia from Kahtrell kicking him all the time. He seems to sleep fine when I put him in our bed, so could be he'll sleep through if he got upgraded to a big bed, but not until I get a safety rail cos he can move around! Just like him mama I suppose lol. But when I do leave him in his cot when he's woken up I just sit next to him and gently pat his back til he's asleep again...and then I wait about 5 minutes to make sure he doesn't wake up again........fingers crossed we'll all get there!

    Author: FionaS
Subject: 17970
Posted: 09 June 2008 at 7:44pm

I'd say she is frustrated. She is probably waking as she enters the light sleep phase of her sleep and doesn't know how to resettle without the dummy. She may not even remember the dummy itself but know something is missing. If she has done this several nights in a row, it will now be a habit and habital nightwakings can be frustrating for kids.

You say you tried CC but remember it takes consistency and persistence for any method to work. If you try something new every few days they get confused.

I understand how confusing it is (trust me...I really do understand) but why not choose the method you feel most comfortable with a stick with it. If she insists on pushing you away, then I guess you have to leave her be and eventually she will stop doing it. I imagine she needs to learn a new self-soothing technique to replace the dummy (and you as you don't want to have to soothe her several times a night).

Does she have an object that she takes to bed regularly? If yes, try including that item more during her wind-down routine. For example, if it is a soft toy, both sit and stroke it while you read / cuddle / sing or what ever it is you do. What you are aiming to do is to get her to associate that object with sleep and settling so when she wakes, she will repeat that to soothe herself.

hope that helps - I have talked to so many sleep experts and the above is a summary of what I think they would say to you.

I think what you are doin is ok if you are not into CIO - although I only let my kids CIO for a lil while (say 10 mins) and then go in settle (even sit for a while) but I don't pick them up or cuddle them. It seemed to work for me not for everyone though

LOL

Could it be the fact that she's wetting her nappy that wakes her up? She's in cloth so would definitely feel the wet sensation until it goes through the stay dry fleece But that would only be for a couple of minutes and it's not as though she wouldn't be used to that as she's always been in cloth.

I just wish she could tell me why she is SO upset when she wakes in the night She doesn't even ask for her dummy anymore!

Edited by Two Blondinis

She was younger than Caitlin though.

Now that she's in a bed if she wakes in the early hours she normally climbs into bed with me, without waking me up, and I don't realise it until the alarm goes off.

Have you looked into why she might be waking at that time? Is she cold or getting hungry, does she have a full nap (now she's toilet training she may be more aware of things like that). Have you checked out the sleepstore website, there are ideas on there for getting your toddler to sleep longer.

Michaela used to always wake between 4:30 - 5am and I couldn't understand why, I just accepted it in the end, then we moved and suddenly she started sleeping in until 5:30 - 6am (yes I know sad but that's my idea of a sleep in). Her room at our old house was close to the cat flaps and I think that maybe the cats were waking her but because our room was on the other side (and I sleep like a log anyway) we hadn't noticed. Do you have any noisy cats in the neighbourhood that may be waking Caitlin?
