Author: FionaS
Subject: 19791
Posted: 12 August 2008 at 1:13pm

We don't have tantrums but the running away and screaming is getting insane. Everytime we go anywhere, Elle runs away. It doens't matter how much fun there is to be had...she runs away. Then when picked up she screams several loud screams at the top of her lungs and often hits us in the face too. We do the thinking spot but the moment she is out she runs away again. This has been going on for months with no improvement.

Everytime I ask her to do something e.g. "come on sweetie, let's go and do XYX". She screams and goes the opposite way.

Today at music she kept going up onto the stage and getting in the way of the projector. I explained to her twice, then did time out ...three times and everytime she went straight back up.

The thing that gets me is that we've been consistent for months and there is no improvement at all.

Her eating is worse too and now she no longer eats any of her favourites. No cereal, toast, sandwiches, eggs, veges or meat. None at all. It is madness.

Woke up happy as, but by 6.30ish he had lost the plot. Starting out with hitting me, I took him away and sat him on his couch and explained it is not ok to hit mummy. He got up and hit me again (not hard at all just to show his thoughts on the situation) dad stepped in and took him to his couch and said you can not hit mummy, made him sit for 2 mins got him up and told him no hitting mummy and you need to say sorry....he came over and said "sorry no hitting mumm" gave me a kiss, I then said lets have some play time, he wanted to draw, got the pens and paper, well that lasted less than 2 minutes....he threw the pens all over the place. I took the pens and said we don't throw them and he did it again, I told him he would sit on the couch again.....well he threw them accross the room. Put him on the couch and he cried, got him up after 2 mins and told him we don't throw pens and he helped me pick them up.

He gets on this wee tangent! it is insane! I am struggling with what to do with it.....I think from now on I will just totally ignore him.

We don't get major tantrums as such, just a scream and a wriggling crying lump.

Running away at e-v-e-r-y SINGLE request. No matter how little or how appealing ,she says no and runs away.

Running away everytime you say stop - this one is very dangerous and driving me nuts.

Tonight she was playing with some little canvas paintings and accidentally bumped one into my head so I said gentle "ooopsy, careful of mummy". She immediately looked really annoyed and whacked me with the canvas!

You have no idea how ironic all this is given DH and my personalities. We never ever raise our voices, or fight or even argue and there is certainly no violence in our home but Elle seems to have a rough predisposition. No idea where she gets it all from!!!!!

In public, I'll ask, tell, and then do it for her or alternately just carry her off if we are in a hurry or needing to leave.

For example we were at the Food Show on the weekend, and Erin discovered she could sit inside a giant Croc shoe they had on display at the Crocs stand. People thought it was so cute and kept asking if they could take photos, as she was smiling and waving at everyone who walked by! We wanted to move on though, but she definitely didn't - so DH just heaved her up out of the shoe when she didn't comply and walked her down to the other end of the hall (though not before the Crocs lady gave her a free Jibbitz to stick in her shoe in an effort to calm her a little).

She was absolutely screaming blue murder all the way, and thrashing about, but was eventually distracted enough to forget.

Sometimes we just have to laugh it off too, so much effort coming from such a little person! It's all you can do really.

Edited by Pearls

Amy does the collapsing on the floor thing too - she even banged her head a few times - until she realised that it really does hurt on the hard wood floor!!! LOL!!

We tend to ignore it, as it mostly happens when we are at home and she doesn't get her own way.

We have a problem with the running away - she is not shy or scared of much and thinks it is a great game. So for us it is either walk holding hands or be in the pushchair.

Seriously, Ashlee must know she's turned 2 and now has decided to become terrible, too.

It's embarrassing to have everyone staring at you in the mall, but what more can you do??! If you've done all you can to negotiate with the monster, then as long as they're safe, I'll let Ashlee throw a tantrum, or DH will pick her up and carry her to where we need to go.

Some days, I have a short wick; most days I have the patience to deal with it. But I'd also love some tips and tricks for tantrums.

Definitely seems to be testing the boundaries and I guess I put it down to the age thing too. She also has a fake cry/whine thing happening.

Sounds like you're handling it the way I would in terms of trying to ignore Tyrell when he plays up - so sorry I don't have any tips either as we're new to the game as well :) I'm just hoping she won't be like me as a toddler and scream until she passes out..

He wanted a ball and i said NO because he has about 10! so as we got out of K-Mart he decided to sit on the ground and scream...i walked about 5 meters away from him and waited for him to stop in the mean time people were stopping and talking to him thinking he was lost & that made him stop. When i finally had enough of his behaviour i picked him up, he carried on screaming all the way to the car, everyone was looking at me like i was a mean mum.....when we got to the car he wouldn't get in his seat, when i finally got him in his seat he started kicking me and arching his back, somehow i managed to get his seat belts on him...

So just know you are not alone, i too hope that that was a one off.....fingers crossed for the both of us!!

Sorry i have no advise on how to handle the situation if it happens again, cos' like you i am new to dealing with paddy's in public....

He had a small sleep during the day about half of what he would have normally had, then his bike would not "park up" like he wanted it to.
We have tried to teach him to ask for help when he needs/wants something. But there was no way he was going to ask.

What do I do?
I just sort of left him as I didn't want to create a further problem
We then went to get stuff for dinner, well he didn't want to get back in the car so tried to run the other way, I diverted him by making the walk to the car a "race" with him....well 3 steps later he worked it out and tried going the other way, I asked him to walk nicely but he just bolted. So I calmly picked him up and got him to the car and he was kicking away! Got the the car seat and he arched his back was putting on this awful whinge like cry (so fake and pathetic) I just carried on calmly and told him it is home time. Got him in the car and then left and started to point out the lights around us to stop him yelling and crying.
I just hope it was a one off......
I am not sure what to do when it happens?

Please tell me we have not hit the terrible two's, we have done so well till now
