Some independant mw's won't take on a client whos opting for an ERCS but others will. If you were to go through the hospital you'd have their midwives either way you will be referred to a OB at 28 wks. Also different obs have very different opinions regarding ERCS, mastertons main one is pro c-section and I had to fight to be allowed to trial labour whereas others as Cuppatea mentioned are pro VBAc trials. If you're not happy with one OB then request another you have that right.

    Author: cuppatea
Subject: 19918
Posted: 08 August 2008 at 10:24am

Hi, I had an elective with Spencer as he was breech, I'm with a midwife this time but I have to see an OB at about 28 weeks to talk over the birth and options etc. I have been told that the OB will want me to trial labour based on my history, which is fine with me as that is what I want anyway.
So depending on the reason for the EC I think will depend on how ready they are to give you an elective next time and the OB in question, i'm in christchurch and I know that here they prefer you to try and labour if you can and are pretty reluctant to perform c/s but it might be different in your area. Although I heard that if you have had one c/s you have the right to have another even if the OB advises against it, but other people might know that for sure.

If you decide to see an OB privately I think it costs about $3000-4000 and if you pay for a c/s it is about $10,000. Obviously you wouldn't need to pay if the OB thought it was necessary just if you were choosing too for no medical reason.

We are about to do another IVF frozen embryo transfer so not pregnant (yet!).

The EC and the whole birth process itself was traumatic to say the least and I am 85% sure that if I do manage to get pregnant again I will opt to have a caesar because I am just to terrified to 'go through that' again.

Bith my births were with an independent midwife, to have a caesar do I still go with a midwife or do I make an appt with a specialist or have both... I have no idea.

So if anyone can tell me how to go about this it would be greatly appreciated, also how much does a specialist cost?
