Thanks guys! I'm probably suffering from 'man blindness' i.e. it's right in front of me on the shelf and I can't see it

That's a cool tip about making your own. Just shows I didn't even know what it was since I figured it was really creamy milk not soured milk.

I find buttermilk at Countdown. It's in an white and orange carton. i always just use normal milk and all my things have worked out ok but can now add vinegar!

My grandmother always told me that you can make your own by adding 1 tsp of vinegar to 1 cup of milk. It sours it slightly making what is basically buttermilk. It has always worked well in recipes doing it this way.
