You'd be able to make them into finger-sized portions for him if you wanted to. Grate the potato, squeeze out as much of the liquid (starch) as you can, add a bit of rice flour (not baby rice, but rice flour) to thicken it (this should make it easier for him to hold without it falling apart), shape with your fingers and cook on an oil-sprayed oven tray (or frypan) on both sides.

Now that he is 7mos he might be interested in some more textures as well and you could make your own baby food (it saves so much $$$). When you are having chicken and vege or similar, put some aside before you add gravy or anything else and mash it with a fork - either for that day, the next day or freeze it for another time.

You can try giving him cooked vege pieces (carrot, kumara etc) but they don't all hold their shape against the firm fist of a baby LOL

Edited by busymum

Rice was fine too... which means you can bake with rice flour if you use allergen-free recipes. I ended up making up some muffins for ella using her Neocate, rice flour, wheat-free baking powder, oil, etc. They tasted, erm, special, but she didn't know that!

Aria Farm lamb chips were OK, potato can be mashed, roasted, cubed and seasoned... you have to get a bit creative, but then again, at that age they don't care that their diet is so limited!

You can either request the lastest guide from your plunket nurse or family centre or even jump on the MOH website and order a free copy of the actual Food and Nutrition guidelines for Babies and toddlers. Its a great read and is the most up to date info on introduction to solids from recent studies carried out.

The biggest change is the introduction of higher allergy foods such as egg and peanuts etc.

Then I added in all the foods that I wanted to that weren't listed on the most likely list. Once he was eating lots then I started trying some of the stuff on the most likely list, like bananas, mandarins, tomatoes etc and just left out fish, eggs, nuts, soy, diary etc.
We did introduce gluten/wheat but it would be possible to leave those out until he is tested again if you prefer. The wheat we probably didn't give till 9ish months anyway.

Just make sure you follow the 4 day rule then if he does have a reaction you can quickly tell what it was and exclude it again. Also some reacitons don't seem to be allergic ones, Spencer had his face come out in red blotches when I gave him strawberry but his skin prick test came out negative and doc said it was probably a chemical reaction and to exclude them as well, but I have no idea what a chem reaction is. Also he isn't allergic to onions but they give him the trots and that was easy to work out cos of following the 4 day rule.
