Oh neat nzpiper, I wouldnt have a clue on the cost either lol. I will get my mum to make a tester but she wont be able to make it till next year she is going mad on a big knitted blanket for bubs.

After having a look with my dad (he is a clothing cutter and knows heaps about fabric, mum is a sewer) we saw that the snap ins looked like they would dry quicker without so much padding, but I see where you are coming from with the AIO being more absorbant, hmmmm might just get a mix pack half and half.

I've just bought an entire stash of the sewn ins, I have one snap in but find it fiddly and bulkier, it doesn't sit as flat. I prefer the sewn ins. I have so many inserts I kept losing the snap in bits and I think the sew ins are a wee bit bigger and not so fiddly. I have now started keeping my snap ins snapped in at all times so I don't lose them

I am not so sure the idea of changing just the insert if they only wee works.  I find my boy wees right through so everything is wet....or the sides at least so we have to change everytime.  then again I think he is holding on and letting it all go at once.  Thats a lot for any nappy to deal with.

 

One advantage I could see to getting extra inserts is as alianasmum said, the outers dry HEAPS faster than the inserts so if you only had a few you could wash them, hang them on the heated towel rail over night and your outers will be dry in the morning.  The inserts take about 24 hours on our towel rail.  Obviously with summer coming things are going to dry fast outside.

 

We have just bought the bakers dozen (13) snap ins and had 3 so we have way more than we probably need but that should make them last longer and do no 2 as well.

Yep we got the snap ins. My partner thought the nappy would look newer longer because its the insert that could get stained and we could just replace it. Im buying a couple of extra inserts instead of extra nappies because the shell dries in no time so the turn around is faster
The inserts do take a while to dry though.

Ill start saving for at least 12 the snap ins do sound better if bubs does a lite pee just needing to change the snap in rather than the whole nappy.

I am hopeful to start using them when bubs is doing soilds rather than runnys. Which my plan is around 6 months. I have 3 snap ins and one sewn in and I prefer the sewn in. I use it without a booster and it lasts as long as the snap ins with a booster. It doesn't take any longer to dry either. The hempy part of the snap in I find takes just as long as the sewn in to dry.

The advantage of the snap in is that you can buy extra snap ins and then if they just piddle you can change the snap in rather than the whole nappy, and yep wash after every change. Newborns tend to poo at every feed (or at least my one did) so would definitely need washing.
How many depends on how much washing you want to do and how often. I think I started out with 8 nappies and then have slowly increased my stash to about 18. I found in the early days 8 wasn't enough though as he was changed more often then than he is now, but we just did a mix of cloth and disposable. Both styles are popular but we have found the snap in's to be every so slightly more.

If you have a heavy wetter then the SIO is the way to go - best idea is to try them both out and see what you think.

I got my trial pack of AIO and snap itti bitti the lavender and peppermint colours are so neat, and they feel so soft lol. They both feel like they will hold everything the little mite will do.
