Jack escaped not that long ago through the window. We heard him get up and then when Ben got up he couldn't find him anywhere, I started freaking out and then noticed him playing on the grass outside our house All our windows are now locked or tied shut.

In chch recently someone found a 3 year old wandering down stanmore road (not the nicest area) at 5 am and so they put the kid on the bus and told the bus driver to take the kid to the police station. Luckily this kid made it to the police station but the parents didn't ring til 9am.

When my 11 yr old was 4 I got a phone call from the next door neighbour at 3 am in the morning saying she was outside crying. We were in a compound in the middle east so it was a very safe environment but none-the-less a scary experience. She was sleep walking. She unlocked the door (the key was in it) and walked out. We ushered her upstairs and back to bed and she never completely woke up. After that we would lock the door and hide the key in the fruit bowl. jetts dam fast too!! and hes a outside boy . . the second he hears the door hes gone in a flash .

i spoke to my dad about the fire thing ages ago as hes been a fire chief for my whole life he said he always tells kids (4+) that if they cant get out because the doors lcked to go to a room/ranchslider/ glass door where theres no flames and throw something thru the window and climb out.

I nearly caught a wee runaway a few days ago. was on my way to church and saw a little boy - no more than 2, sprinting down the road - no one with him. So turned the car around and drove in front of him. Got out to see a girl - around nine, running after him, with an angry looking mum (i guess) behind. oooh- i had a wee runaway last friday!! it was just before 6.30am and my little trouble maker kayla (2) took off out the front door and started running up the street!! it has been my fear for a while so often snib the front door (have a lock up real high) this particular morning it was only locked down low. i ran after her in my pj's up the street not too impressed wow she is a fast runner!! she was way up the street by the time i caught her!

We have a deadlock and bolts on all the windows, I wouldn't put anything past these gremlin creatures!

Wow so many scary stories. Kids just have no comprehension on danger, ahh to be that innocent.
Our house has quite old fashioned doors so he wont be able to reach the door handles for a while. and i have trouble opening the windows! He manages to escape our property when im not looking though, he follows our dog under the fence, crosses the road to pat the horsey.... lucky we live secludedly so there is few cars but still! scary.

lock you windows too!! ( most don't lock anyway..) When my Elijah was 2 and a bit I was woken by door knocking at 7:30 am by my neighbour and my son Elijah in his pjs wet from rain. The neighbor had found him riding his bike in the STREET in the rain in his pjs- I was flabbergasted and sheepishly brought him in and discovered he had let himself out the window in the lounge and hopped on the front deck and off he went- so frightening. We had to get locks installed in the wondows he could reach after that. When DD was nearly two we had just come home from doing groceries. I had locked the front door but left the keys in it as I didn't think she was capable of unlocking it. I was upstairs putting the groceries away when I heard a knock on the door. Eeek! Benjy is the same. I have started having to bolt the door as he is able to open the button lock and has taken himself for a walk once. Thankfully he didn't get far before we realised!

When my now 8yr old was 4, she was having a sleep over at our friends across the road. I woke to knocking on my door around 4am and it was her coming home. She'd woken up and everyone was asleep so decided to come home. My friends never heard her and their bedroom is right next to the door she came out of!

The house we are in now will be easy for a little one to unlock, so if we are still here when this bean is older, we'll have to look at a chain......oh but we also have 3 ranchsliders! Oh dear!

So lucky the girl in the first post was found by a good citizen. Thats so scary! We lock our doors with a key from the inside too- my big fear is that we won't be able to get out quickly enough if there is a fire

Hehehe I did something very similar when I was about 6, although I was sleepwalking! I walked all the way up our street (this was in the UK) and knocked on a neighbours door and asked "Is my mummy here?". Luckily the lady knew who I was and took me home...but could have been a different story! It was at 3am!! My parents put huge bolts on the front door after that!

today i was talking to 1 of the other mums at J's homecaregivers place.
she also like me has a 1yr old and a 5yr old
shes a teacher her dh is a policeman
5am friday their phone rang, which isnt unusual due to her dh's job
but this is how the conversation went . . .

XX "hello"
? "is this mrs XX"
XX " yes"
? "do you have a 5yr old child named X"
XX "yes"
? " well we have just found her wandering down XX road by the shops"
XX " what no i think you have the wrong person my 5yr old is tucked up in bed . . "

XX - runs and checks to find an empty bed and the door wide open screams at dh wo jumps in the car skidding up the road to where the Quality bakers bread delivery guy had found their 5yr old!

she had walked about 3-4km at 5am in the rain because she wanted to see her nanna!
