We did the same thing Ginger, paid for our appts privately to get our foot through the door quicker... initial appt was $195 and that covered consult, DP's blood tests (since a prior SA had already come back low) first FA tested SA (funny how they just dont trust medlabs results lol), and the scan.... follow-up appt was only $120, but the 2nd SA was $60...

We're in Auckland and were assigned to Fertility Plus. F+ has a slightly shorter waiting list than Fertility Associates, although I'm not sure why. We were told that by FA anyway - I think their waiting list is about 12 months. We were through and finished our cycle within 8 months with F+. I have also been told that your 'eligibility' eg. how bung you are/your eligibility points level, how good a 'risk' you are for IVF etc can also make a difference, but I'm not sure how or why.

Going through the public system from the beginning though slows things dramatically - we paid for private consultations right up to going on the waiting list for IVF. It's the difference between waiting months for an initial consult, and a few weeks depending on how chocka the specialist it. The waiting list is about a year once you are approved.

I had unexplained infertility for 2 years and was told I would have to wait until we had been trying for 5 years before we could get on the IVF waiting list. However if they find a reason why you can't conceive eg, DH low sperm count etc, then you won't have to wait so long.

Luckily for us our DS came along in the meantime.

in Auckland the waiting list is app 12 months. hi all, my husband and i have just started the process of going to the doctor etc as we haven't been able to conceive for 2 years, my doc has referred us to the public health system and we are awaiting our appointment. Not sure of the outcome as we both seem fine on the surfice. I'm curious, if we have to go through ivf, does anyone know the waiting period once you're approved onto the list? i read one post where she was on for 6 months, that seems very short? i'm based in auckland.
any help appreciated.
