(I really dislike the term 'extended' as it gives the impression of it not being a normal thing to nurse a child after the one year, or 2 year mark, or whatever is deemed "OK")

I tandem fed my first two boys, and then when my 3rd son was born I triandem (all 3) fed for 2 years.

I weaned the first two boys simultaneously, they were old enough to have a conversation with, and just said I didn't want to feed them anymore, they were down to a feed before sleep only anyhow.(They were FINE with it!) My baby is 4 now, and still nurses to sleep, and will sometmes have a little during the night.

I'm up to my 10th consecutive year of breastfeeding now, it will be a bit odd when my youngest weans...

Here is my favourite article about breastfeeding.

"The Natural Age of Weaning" Kathy Dettwyler an anthropologist who has studied across different primates.

http://www.kathydettwyler.org/detwean.html

Edited by Free2BeMe - 24 April 2013 at 5:57pm

I think the taste of the milk changes and or runs a bit dry lol. I actually thought Clodagh was going to wean while I was pg and she certainly cut waaay back...was still BF a couple of times a day at her lowest. But yeah picked up again no problem once Scarlett arrived. I don't blame you for not wanting to tandem feed- it's not all it's cracked up to be although of course BF in general is a pretty useful parenting too (and obviously continues to be great for the kids lol)

Naaww Bizzy.....I'll be sad and relived once Clodagh decides to eventually wean!! x

    Author: Kellz
Subject: 22371
Posted: 06 December 2011 at 2:07pm

He will wean of his own accord eventually, just might not be to your time frame!!

My DS is 22 months too, we are now down to one feed a day- before he goes to bed at night. Ive reduced the feeds very very gradually. We night weaned him at 11 1/2 months- reducing the night feeds by including Daddy more at bed time and then him getting up to him in the night instead of me just feeding him everytime he woke.
Then he was feeding first thing in the morning, last thing for bed and usually only wanting a bf 2 other times a day- when these feeds became just an on-off quick suck, I start distracting him for one of these and he was soon down to just one in the middle of the day- after a few months he dropped this too, then went back to wanting a quick suck heaps in the day so I decided to stop this and just offered cuddles, distraction, water, snacks instead and he was fine.
Just 2 weeks ago we decided to drop the morning feed cos we are ttc and its not happening and I cannt think of any other reason why its taking us longer concieve this time than before. We figured that feed would be easier to drop that the feed to sleep, so DH got up with DS in the morning and gave him a snack and took him for a walk at 5.15am instead of him just coming in our bed and being fed til after 6am. Agian he was easily distracted by DH, he would point to our room to come in to me, but then be sweet once given a snack.
So now we just down to the feed before bed, will keep ttc and if not preg in a few more months will look at fully weaning. I dont want to fully wean him tho, and if I was preg then I wouldnt have droppped the morning feed either.

We have been ttc for 5 months now tho, and am starting to wonder if the bf is stopping me getting utd since both kids took less than 2 months to concieve, and the only difference I can think of is that this time Im bf. He is now only feeing 2-3 times a day, usually 2, 12 hrs apart. I know heaps of people get preg while bf tho, but also know of others who didnt get preg while still bf even 1 feed a day. Am not wanting to wean tho, so will just keep ttc and see how we go.

    Author: Kellz
Subject: 22371
Posted: 22 August 2011 at 8:11am

1st-time-preggies - We have been through many of the same things here- DS is 19months. We night weaned by getting Dad to go into him- we started the process by involving DH in the bed time routiue more, starting with him being in the room while I fed DS to sleep, then progressing to him taking DS off me once he was asleep and putting him to bed,..then to me feeding DS then passing him to DH for a story and I kissed him and he waves me goodbye and DH puts him to bed.
Now hes so used to DH being there in the night, that although he always wants Mumma in the daytime, he doesnt call for me when DH goes into him overnight,...but if Im the one that gets up to him then he straight away wants boob- I always go in with water and offer him that instead, and say "no its night time". If we both try and still he wont settle or keeps waking- lately its been for teething,... then I do feed him.
I feed him on demand 24/7 for a year then my mental and physical health was suffering from the sleep deprivation- was back to 1-3hrly feeds overnight, so that when we night weaned him, and its just been when hes sick and cant be comforted any other way since then.

In the last few weeks tho, DS has been wanting to latch on for just a few seconds at a time heaps of times a day! He had gradually reduced his feeds of his our accord, and was mostly only having feeds first thing in the morning and before bed at night, and sometimes one in the day but not often. Now hes sticking his toungue out at me and going "ahh ahh" and pulling my top up or doen heaps! Its fine at home, but I feel self consciuos in some places when we out,...i woulkdnt if he actually wanting to feed, but he just pops on and off heaps then laughs and runs off to play again! The more I let him do it in the day then more he seems to wake at night, so Ive been trying to distract him away form it in the day- luckily its winter and Im not wearing tops with easier access, lol!

    Author: 1st_Time_Preggies
Subject: 22371
Posted: 21 August 2011 at 8:17pm

My DS is 18 months and LOVES his boobie :-) He would have it all day long if I let him :-) At the moment he gets fed when he wakes up in the morning, sometimes after his nap if he is cranky, and before bed. However he can go without the morning and the after nap feed if someone else is looking after him (ie his Dad), doesn't bother him.

Problem is, he has been sick for MONTHS (about six!) on and off, so I have also been feeding him in the night as it is a great settling tool. (Btw so much for bm helping with immunity!!!) However, he is now getting well again and I would like to cut the one or two times back to see if that will stop him waking (am not holding out too much hope though ;-)).

I'm just not sure how to go about it? Last time I just sent my hubby in and it was sorted in a few nights. But now he is so much more aware and also knows exactly what he wants. If my hubby goes in he screams bloody murder and cries mama mama mama, which is heartbreaking. So I am going to have to do it. But if I don't feed him he screams and points to the chair and will not let me settle him in any other way.

Also I think I would like to have him weaned by the end of the year. I had hoped he would do it of his own accord but I don't think so! Anyone got any tips? I am doing the don't offer/don't refuse as it is during the day but it is the evening boobie before bed that I'm most unsure about.

TIA!
Author: MamaT
Subject: 22371
Posted: 18 July 2011 at 3:01pm

So I've just been reading "the womanly art of breastfeeding" which states "your child may wean himself early in the pregnancy when a few little ones notice a taste change in the milk, or he may stop nursing around the fourth month when some women notice a reduction in the milk supply. He may even wean toward the end of pregnancy when the milk changes to colostrum...."

It then goes on to say "in a study of 503 La Leche League members who became pregnant while still nursing, researchers found that 69% of their babies weaned at some time during the pregnancy. Of course, there was no way to know how many of these little ones would have weaned if their mothers had not of been pregnant."

I have been using breastpads again, thanks for the suggestions girls, it does seem to ease the pain between feeds, but it's still pretty painful, but bearable, so we will persist.
DS is still feeding heaps so at this stage it certainly doesn't seem he'll wean anytime soon, which I am so glad about.

DD started acting like my milk was yuck before I'd even missed a period (about 3.5 weeks pg) - it was her odd behaviour and the excrutiating latch pain that made me do the test in the first place. She got quite sick when I was about 9 weeks pg and drank lots anyway, but you could tell she didnt' really like it cos she'd switch sides repeatedly until she'd tasted each side 3 or so times and then seem to think "fine, they are both yuck, so this one will do"

For her she got less and less interested, but I think with effort I could have kept her drinking for a fair bit longer (although I was happy for her to wean once I was UTD).

    Author: Kate08
Subject: 22371
Posted: 11 July 2011 at 9:36pm

Just found this thread, really interesting. Breastfeeding went completely wrong first time round and I only managed 6 weeks, now with baby #2 we're at nearly 5 months and it's going brilliantly. So pleased!
So I have no idea about weaning. I hope it's some way off, but is it just a case of baby dropping/refusing feeds as solids start and increase?
Also, she had slow weight gains initially. Some weeks she hardly gained, others a small gain. So I'm waking her for night feeds on recommendation on Plunket [this, or start solids at 3 months which seemed a bit silly to me, given that they start off eating a tiny amount anyway]. This worked brilliantly and she's getting nice and chubby. But when can I stop waking her without her weight dropping off? Has anyone had this happen?
As for comments, already people are asking if I'm "still feeding" her. Duh.
We used to have a super king in oz.... ah the memories! But its surprising what you can achieve when you have to. Yeah worried about the jealousy thing too, but I'm sure it will work itself out, hence doing it now rather than later.

Well good news on the weaning so far. After balling session yesterday arvo that ripped my heart out, she didn't cry last night at all, eventually realised that it wasn't going to happen and went to sleep. This am she woke up asked for booby once, we snuggled and she went back to sleep for a bit, then woke up again, had a minor tanty -no crying - then was right as rain. Very surprised!

We are cosleeping too but in a double with my DP so come summer I hope to be UTD with #2 and will be working at getting her into her own room next door to ours. ATM it's a complete fail! I will try to BF her as long as I can but we'll see. I am very worried about jealousy surrounding BFing! She doesn't even let me get my hands anywhere near her head/my boobs when feeding!

We are co-sleeping too, forgot to mention that, which is not ideal now, but it is what it is at the mo because of the house layout. We will be changing this set up when it gets warmer and then she will have her own room (has been set up now for 6mths)right next door to ours, and bubs can sleep in a bassinet with us or co-sleep. So that is the next hurdle after weaning is getting her to sleep in her own bed. Fun and games!!

Then again this morning cried for about 15mins again. This arvo was the hardest, fell asleep in the car and woke up grizzly, she's used to booby to settle her, balled for about 1/2 hr with me trying to comfort her then read her stories. Its quite heartbreaking and I feel I'm taking something special away from her. Feel like such a cow! Pretty sure she was dry sucking too!

Oving would be good as we plan to TTC #2 next week but have to wait for Depo to wear off.
