When my boy was newborn I was useing fitted so this might be different but all we did was rinse the worst of the poo of then dry pail. They did get a bit stained but once it came into summer and the sun came out all the stains disapeared.
At night time we just sat them in the dry pail till morning then in the morning I had the lovely job of rinsing them all off. Sunlight is the key.  I remember almost bursting into tears the first time I washed my prefolds and found them all stained!  Everyone told me sunlight would fix it and I couldnt believe them but it did!!!!

 

This time round I only rinse the poos (by poos are we meaning the yellow seedy stuff?) if they are really bad, otherwise I just chuck it in the nappy bucket and it goes in the wash that night.  No stains.

 

Toddler poos on the other hand......YUK!

I don't plan to rinse each nappy after changing - I'm just going to try dry pailing, so I'll just throw the nappy straight into the nappy bucket as is and do a wash (with a cold pre-rinse) every day. I'll keep a lidded nappy bucket in the laundry and one in the nursery (with the change table) just to make it easier on myself. Hi, Thanks for advice. Looks like I need to pray for sunny weather!!

 Was wondering if anyone had any advice for storing the nappies before washing? When we change her in the night, going to the bathroom to rinse them is a big job.. What does any one else to?

I put my flats in nappy san, rinse & then hang in the sunlight somewhere, outside or inside by window. Outside is definitely better.

With my MCN's I rinse without spin & then wash with Ecopowder & hang outside & the stains go.

I am at the newborn stage too and i just give my prefolds a little scrub in the sink lightly with a scrubbing brush and a high pressure tap. I then squeeze them out and chuck them in a bucket (I usually wash every second day)
What the washing machine doesnt get out the sunlight sure does.

Oh yeah, if the prefolds got really bad then I had a bucket of napisan sitting there to put them in.....forgetting the really newborn stage sorry (how quickly you forget!!!)

My sister used pocket nappies with her newborn and although they stained too she said the best thing for it was sunshine - over time it bleached all the yellow out of her nappies

It will get better soon once you get over the newborn poo stage. But you could try soaking the prefolds (not the covers) in something like nappy san. I use the ecostore soaker. I know some people say not to soak nappies, but I always found it fine with my prefolds. I bleached mine a couple of times when they got quite stained and they were fine. I (being naughty) have a scrubbing brush in the laundry sink just for nappies, I just give them a light scrub if they need it with the water running and put them in a bucket. I wash every night so they aren't sitting around much.

Hi We are using prefolds and covers on our 1 week old and are wondering how to deal with the soiled nappies. At the moment we just pop the insert into the bucket and then wash them over night. This seems to be leaving the prefolds stained though. Have tried rinsing out the poo in the toilet but not alot seems to come off!!! Any ideas about the storage and washing of the soiled napies would be geatly appreciated.
