I'm like that too, Toni. I had the "perfect pregnancy" with Hannah and was going to have a drug-free, water birth etc etc etc. No one could have predicted that things would go so badly so quickly. You're very very right though!

It's a sad fact that hospital protocol will try to take over your birth, especially a "high risk".

Lucky for me I have a MW that's as adamant that this baby will come out the right way this time and we've agreed to stay home for as long as I can. I've already started to do some research into VBAC birth plans (or should I say - wish lists) and have made a note of everything I want/don't want and made a point of saying "Please make an informed decision with both parents and our MW, don't intervene just because it is hospital protocol"

Personally, I would never agree to a home birth as I believe that when things go wrong you need to be in the right place, just my opinion based on what happend last time.

whn i laboured in the bath with toby i had no monitoring, didnt even see the mw till i got out and buzzed her... maybe if you dont want too much monitoring you could consider a home birth... cause it can be very hard and tiring trying to fight the protocols that hospitals have in place, which dont always go along with a mothers wishes or even what is best for mums and bubs.... When I had my waterbirth VBA2Cs they used a waterproof doppler to monitor. Mine wasnt a vbac but I laboured in the pool and my MW used the doppler thing in the water to check bubs and then I got out for an internal...needed to pee anyway.  The pain was bearable knowing that I was going to get back into my beloved water soon.

 

I ended up getting an epi as I was getting tired and the pain was building (but I was still coping..just) and then we ended up with a c-section as he had got stuck. 

 

I was impressed at how nice the water was and my MW kept monitoring me unobtrusively...my labour was very medicalised.

Yea they should be able to regularly monitor you with a doppler I think. I had water birth and they monitored the baby every now and then with a doppler thingee (obviously waterproof). My birth was straight forward so I don't know if you'd be in the same situation or if they feel they'd need more monitoring?

I really hope you get the chance to try again in the water. Had a chat with my MW the other day just to see where we both stood on what I hoped for with the birth.
I mentioned that I'd like to try a water birth again and she said she didn't think this was possible as I'd need to be monitored all the time.
I've read that you can either A: refuse to be monitored as much or B: keep getting in and out of the pool.
Both aren't ideal but I wanted to know what others have done in that situation.

What monitoring do they do? Last time my MW checked me lots of times whilst I was in the bath, don't remember if she checked bubs though.
