Yes, three weeks to go (leaving here 29th). DP went back on Thursday and since then the girls have been so so naughty. Not listening, doing really naughty stuff they now will annoy me, especially one of them. She is also hitting, biting, scratching, pinching and pushing her sister and pulls her hairs. I've started time out, but don't want to make a huge fuss every time, as she just smiles into my face every time she gets told off. Apart from that we are having a good time here and just had a really sunny and still summery weekend. I hope the weather is good when I get back to NZ. Three in a row Birdie, that would be tough for the first few years. But in the long run probably really nice to have them close together. Have a great trip Hibiscus. Yes do tell what great idea's you had for the plane and such as maybe next year I want to take Zoe on an oversea's trip........yeah she'll be a bit older but still I think we will need distractions and good ones!!
OH and I hear you on the toddler challenges!!! Sometimes it really gets to you and all you want is to go somewhere on your own for awhile........and I only have one!!!! Mind you I have spent 10 days with missy 24/7 and although Gran and Grandad were there it was me doing everything so I really missed Hubby helping for a wee bit. We had Plunket yesterday. Twin one is 10.04 kg and 87.5 cm and twin two 10.30 kg and 87.5 cm. That makes them both sit at the 25th percentile for weight and the 75th percentile for height. The weight difference between the two has stayed consistent since birth (the difference at birth was 75g).

I could go on about toddler challenges no end right now, but trying to be grateful for what we have. Life is humbling at times.

We're just over a week away from setting off for our big trip to Europe. Being a working mum is f'n hectic! But in saying that I am enjoying my job, Josh appears to be enjoying preschool (sometimes too much to sleep, lol) and we're finding our rhythm. I am tired a lot of the time, but that is probably to do more with Josh having an ear infection in both ears and the a full night's sleep being a bit hit and miss than it is with work... though I'm sure it plays a part (well not the work, more the early starts to my day because of work - I am SO not a morning person). My evenings are spent prepping for the next day or getting chores done that just can't wait (like washing, urgh )... speaking of which, I have stuff I need to do and bed is calling already

Gotta say though, as challenging as Josh can be at this age, I am also loving it (though it is scary just how much he reminds me of me... Zoe's foot or leg seems to have come right......who know's what it was just a little tweak I guess.
Well we have had snow and lots of it! Zoe has loved it this year and cried each time we made her come inside. I guess she is a true winter baby as loves being cold and wet for some reason
Potty is a hit and miss thing here. I'm not pushing it as its now winter and summer is the best time for toilet training. Zoe knows what wee's and poo's are and is telling me more and more that she's doing it etc so I'm happy with that at this stage Probably look at getting a toilet seat insert for her soon as apparently if they don't take to the potty to well those are a good alternative and sometimes they like it better as they are copying Mum and Dad. Cheeky, I went to the fieldays as a visitor two years in a row when DP had to work there and enjoyed it. Different story if you have to work though, I guess. Good luck for moving house.

We will have celebrate our girls' birthday a little early this year or DP will miss out as I will be travelling with the girls ahead of him. Will be strange to not celebrate on the actual day, but the girls won't know.

I am having issues of a different sort with potty, Danda: recently they quite deliberately start to wee into the bath water as soon as I put them into the bath (they are standing up) when I suggest they use the potty (or actually tell them that we use the potty for that) they go into refusal mode. I am trying not to make a big deal out of it, but am clueless what to do. I guess this one shall pass too, as they loose interest.

BM swing and slide set sounds fun. We still haven't got a swing. I take them to the playground for that. At least we finally managed to finish the sandpit. Unfortunately the weather is bad now.
Hope her foot is ok BM!

Hi all,

Crazy how we almost have 2 year old. I have a challenging wee man, he's very determined and definitely knows what he wants, if he doesn't get it then he can throw a mega tantrum, guess he is just figuring out what he can get away with.

Busy busy here, moving house this weekend then I'm working at the fieldays the following week, followed by a week in Samoa. Have just spent the evening wiping the ceilings cause there was lots of fly poop

We have lots of words, 'no more' or 'one more' are the most used at moment.
No interest in potty here, but I haven't been pushing the idea, once everything has calmed down I will be taking the side off his cot then starting toilet training.

Anyway enough from me. Hope your trip overseas goes well Hibiscus.

Hi ya

It's so interesting seeing the changes in them aye Hibiscus. Zoe is saying lots of words and little sentences now but sometimes it comes out as a garbled mess and other times very clear pronounciation.
No party planned here at all this year. I'm going to do a cake and am just saying to people to come around and have a drink and share some cake and those with kiddies can bring them for a wee play with Zoe's new swing, slide set she is getting for her birthday........providing its a nice day of course.
Have noticed Zoe limping today but DH and I have checked her foot and nothing seems to be amiss and she doesn't seem to be in pain as such. Will keep an eye on it and if it gets worse or doesn't improve take her to the Dr. She may have tweaked her leg somehow when she was jumping around this morning but we haven't had tears or anything so really don't know.

Had our 2 year old health check today. Both girls are 82cm but Lexi is 9.4kg and Mia is 10.5kg so the weight gap is widening.

Have just ordered the cake today, we're going with a Peppa pig theme cos the girls LOVE Peppa Pig cartoons and I've ordered some Peppa Pig party supplies from Oz which my mum is going to pick up this week when she's over there.
Have decided just to have a family afternoon tea this year, MIL will be here for the weekend too.

Hi Mamaof3monkeys, it's not normally so quiet here...

How's everyone and especially those who are due?

We're preparing for our big OE trip at the end of this month and our girls received passports ok despite horrible photos ( they were crying while the photos were taken).

Otherwise, as we're approaching two years old, we are getting more fighting over toys, lots of talking and clearer pronunciation for some words, zero interest in potty, still very messy eating, lovely singing, fear at the pool, missing out on their one nap of the day at times , loving books, getting good at puzzles... the list goes on. But I will stop here as I don't even know whether anyone is reading here.

BTW, we should probably dig out our list, as the first 2nd birthdays must be happening soon! Anyone planning a party? We have a girl who isn't hugely a vege eater either but I'm not worrying about it yet. Zoe eats a lot of fruit and she likes carrots, potatoes and cucumber. As she loves mashed potato my trick is to cut the brocolli really fine and mix it in the mashed potato. I put peas in her mince the other day and they went down a treat too. I'm finding I have to disguise the vege's really well or otherwise she picks them out or spits them out of her mouth.

I am having some occasional meltdowns now, think it is being preggie. James pulled the bag of oven chips down and got them all over the floor and I screamed at him and he was in tears for ages.

J is off veggies too and becoming a real fussy eater so can relate. The most veggies he has is when they are not visable in spag b, other than that he quite often has kids good like fish and chips which isn't that good now.

He eats fruit though but not much. My girls are pulling everything off the shelves at the moment and I got quite upset about it this morning which led to a very firm NO. Totally pointless though as they did it again two minutes later. Max is the same here too and we use either prune juice or lactulose (sp) that the doctor gave us and it works too. Jane, I hate the feeling when you Wonder whether you should have done things differently. I wonder whether my girl got stung by a wasp today as she started to scream and I saw a wasp flying away from her face. We couldn't detect a sting, but she was screaming in shock/pain? for half an hour. I felt so guilty because I had chased away the wasp from their food bowl, but then not thought about making sure the wasp doesn't go near my eating girls.

Haha speaking of anti-vege kids, we had stew for dinner, and decided to take a bit of a tough-love approach this time, so he had to have a certain number of bites of stew before he was allowed to leave the table. Danda we have a complete anti-vege kid here too! we did BLW and everything, but still won't touch them. I'm hoping its just a phase, as he's quite fussy with a lot of things, they all get called 'hot' and he just won't even try things. He'll surprise us occasionally, the other night we had a creamy mushroom chicken dish and he ate the lot all by himself, which was good as it had onions in it, but thats a rarity at the moment. so hope its just a phase!

Other than the things you already mentioned, Danda, my doctor recommended beetroot (I wonder whether that includes drinking the juice if you use those from the tin?). Dried fruit ( includes raisins) need an extra intake of water or they dry you out. So if constipation is a problem I wouldn't give raisins also because they contain a lot of sugar and sugar is a number one culprit for constipation. Banana is really bad for that reason too. I think prunes are ok because they are fibrous. You could also pre soak the prunes overnight and add them to the porridge. They eat porridge every day for breakkie and 1-1.5 pieces of bread each day. i think it's happened cos they have now started refusing even the sachets of pureeed baby vege so aren't any ANY veges at all I

I ended up taking her to the Dr and getting something. Took two doses to get things moving but she now has a completely red raw bum from all the attempts. Poor little mite.

Anyone have ideas for resolving constipation?
My girls have gone from 3+ sloppy poos/day to 1 hard one and Mia is so miserable trying to get it out. It's all she talks about, poor little thing.

They eat lots of fruit including kiwifruit and rasins. Can't get prunes or prune juice into her. She's drinking good amounts of water. I've tried brown sugar & boiled water (wasn't sure how much to give though?).

JaneS, I've looked at a book with them while they have their milk for rhe last two nights and it has improved things a bit! So thank you!

Chex, also meant to say a big Thank You to you for the advice about brushing their teeth first before letting them have a go by themselves. It took them a while to get used to it, but it has made a huge difference! It's still not 100% perfect but from not being able to brush their teeth at all we have now a success rate of perhaps 7 out of 10. hotmummy, my girls have broken 4 tea cups (espresso cups) - all cheap as too. Since they have had real crockery from the start (except suction cup bowl) I am going to to carry on letting them have it, so they get the idea that it's fragile. They broke a plate the other day by banging it on the table and got a bit of a fright when the shards went everywhere. Had a tiny amount of blood too! James broke his little tea cup, that is the end of that. Only got it because it was in the charity shop for 50c!

Hibiscus, James also spills drinks on purpose. He has a nice drink bottle with big straw type thing but sometimes not keen for some reason.

Yay for success on potty those of you above. Still putting James on it but some days not so often, he is in nappies though again and take it off to put him on.

My two have given up on stories at the moment, they just can't sit still! It's weird cos DH has been reading them stories before bed since they were 3 months old.

We're getting there on the potty training front too - and without me trying (cos I keep putting it off). Lexi told me she'd done poos the other morning (which is normal), I checked her nappy, nothing but she kept insisting so asked if she wanted the potty, she giggled. GO Josh - just wait Ang till you get to where we are with wanting to take her own knickers on and off and on and off etc etc multiple times while sitting on the toilet. Alright if she gets both legs in different holes not so good for balance when they are both in one hole.

E still has a lot of milk as still bf. So at bed, during night, when waking up, before nap, after nap, when every she sees someone else having a bf, if I hold someone elses baby( just to stake her claim) and any other reason she can think of

I know you ladies will appreciate this... (though it happened for Nan and not me)

Today, Josh let Nan know he'd just done a poo (pretty much a first ) and then later on in the day she put him on the potty and suggested he go wees and he did!!

Seems like things are starting to click for Josh about the sensations associated with toileting, yay!

I saw the red throat yesterday morning as she screamed blue murder at me in The Toy Libray so whisked her straight to the Dr.

I got away with no bottles because I BF til they were 19 months. But they do love their cows milk from the straw cup, like you hotmummy, 3 times a day 150 mls. Portia is on the bottle now, three times a day, just the same as Milla was. Plunket may maon about her not having enough food etc and yes at times she does not eat knowing she will get a bottle anyway, but I talked to my GP about and she said, dont worry about it, its a whole food, and its not like she will be on a bottle at school, which is so true. as long as they are eating , especially iron rich foods it wont do them any harm

Hibiscus, James was still on 150mls milk in a bottle 3 times a day until recently. He now has morning bottle and bottle before bed, still lying on my lap which is now getting harder.

He is given milk in a small plastic tea cup or other kids cup with handles but no top at lunchtime, got to watch him though as if he is walking with tea cup he sometimes forgets to hold it properly and it goes everywhere.

I brought him a nice drink bottle around 18mths trying to put formula in that as Plunket said he should have until 2years. It has been super quiet.

My girls ditched their bedtime bottle so long ago I can't even remember how old they were. It had turned into a complete battle with them running around and like you Hibiscus, milk going everywhere.

Now they only have milk first thing in the morning.

Lexi has been sick since Fri night with temps and runny bum, temps settled yesterday but she was miserable so took her to the Dr and she has tonsillitis. Poor poppet.

so quiet here.

who's still giving milk before bed (bottle, cup or sippy cup)? we do dinner bath (if needed), nappy, jammies, milk ( in straw cup), teeth, story, bed.

the problem that i'm having with this routine is that they cannot sit still while they're having the milk at this time and we get spills (in the bedroom ) most nights despite us holding onto the cups for them. They're waving them around, pulling on them, etc. drives me crazy! So I'm thinking of giving them their milk earlier with their dinner. But am kinda scared to change the milk before sleep routine that they have known since birth (in one form or another) .

Iit's past 2 pm and I can still hear my girls chatting in their cots. They are supposed to have their afternoon sleep! This has been going on since the weekend. I don't know why. They had to go down at 11am not so long ago because they got so tired. Today we had an activity in the morning and were only home at 12.30, then lunch, nappies etc. but they have been playing around for an hour in their cots now. Two days ago I put them down at 12 and they mucked around for an hour before falling asleep. So i put them down half an hour later yesterday and it took them 1.5 hours before they fell asleep!

Angie, I think it's really cool how you wrote that. To be honest I would've been too scared to be as 'informal' in my CV, but I guess you have to do something different if you want to stand out from the crowd. Especially if your field is communication. And your employers obviously liked it too!

Danda, it's a pain when the one who wakes up first wakes the other one up when they're calling out, isn't it? Usually I have one grumpy child in that situation.

My girls are still in their cots Hibiscus. Just very vocal when they want out, there's no playing nicely or chattering. They go from sounds asleep to standing up screaming "mum,mum, mum" and 'out, out, out" .

I was amazed Angie at how much I had forgotten in just 18 months when I went back. Hibiscus, I listed it in my CV - saw no point in not being upfront about it This is how I did it (thought it shows a bit of my humour/personality):

Jul 2010 – present Stay-at-home Mum [employer]Joshua Fergus: Christchurch, NZ Everything from carer, nurse, educator and chef to musician, photographer, janitor and handyman, including a myriad of parenting tasks that slot in between.

I didn't let on, til late in the interviewing/hiring process that I was a single mum... didn't want them thinking possible negatives about what I could or could not handle.

I think being 'out of work' due to parenting is a lot different than being unemployed. Hey ladies,

Hope you're all well. Nothing much happening in our neck of the woods, still trying to unpack the house, but my wee "helpers" are more of a hindrance so it keeps getting ignored.

Lexi asked for the potty today and actually did wees in it. Yay!

I've got the girls on iron supplements at the mo and I think it's making a difference to their appetites which is encouraging.

Mia is still resisting day sleeps, seems to be day on, day off which is a total pain, and she's still a complete mare when she misses one, losing the plot over silly things - like she can't get her sock off. Hopefully this "phase" finishes soon!

We've had great progress with sleeping (knock on wood) using (among other tactics) a sleep training clock. Took them a couple of weeks to cotton on but they are now staying in bed till the "sun is awake".

Oh and we have plenty of uh-oh's here too - actually Josh sounds very similar 'cause we don't have a huge amount of words either... though he perfectly copied his cousin the other day saying "I'm stuck" . Other than that I can see he's listening hard and trying to copy speech and say words, just still sounds like a lot of babble, even to my ears!

He's great. Is certainly showing his 'nearly 2ness' quite nicely some days Lmao..

His favourite phrase at the moment is "UH OH!" ... Other than that we don't have a huge amount of words (and no other 2 words together either) but it's soo cute..

Are anyone elses kids totally aware of when they are peeing? We just can't catch it on the potty. He tells us he is going. We'll put him on the potty or toilet.. But about 20seconds after he gets off he will pee...

Well, I am now a working mum I got the job as Media Adviser with Environment Canterbury and start on May 21...

Sooooooooooo excited - though the thought of how organised I'm going to have to be scares me a little! But feels really good to be employed again and that I'm able to get off the DPB.

My stain approach is always scrub with wonder soap then soak in napisan, then wash.

Tried all the vocals, they loved reciting them, but were still running away from me! But wait a minute, today....tadaa... had success tonight with me brushing first and then letting them! I also did a crocodile sound (probably more like a lion, I have no idea what a crocodile sounds like) and the loved repeating that and showed me their teeth. I think the key was to let me do it first though, as we have been through all the animal roars before and had no success with it. We play an AHHHHHHHHHHHHH EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE game. Basically ahh to open wide and do a brush at the back, then ee to do the front then ahh for the other side at the back etc. Sometimes we have to play as well and getting each of the ahhs to strecth out long enough can be a bit of an issue sometimes but we get there.
