I know how you feel, it drives me crazy but I think you handled it the same way I would have... not give in completely but you dont want them hungry either... although I know that as everyone has said you shouldnt give in.. just easier said than done.

I have this problem at bed time.. I make sure they eat thier tea or at least have had enough, then I give them a warning that they aer going to bed in 10 minutes so they have that time to eat something before they brush thier teeth but no food in bed... every time they start but Im sooo hungry mum... then i feel bad cos i know its horrible trying to go to sleep when your really hungry. We used to let them eat in bed but then they wouldnt eat tea cos they knew they would get something (normally a sandwich or fruit) in bed....Now the hard fast rule is no food in bed and its slowly getting easier

Totally agree with this comment. As soon as you give in and let them get their way, they learn they can. Next time they will just be worse coz they know you will give in if they try hard enough.

I would have let him run away and sulk in his room - and wouldn't have given him anything til lunch. But I would have made lunch earlier than usual (perhaps 11 / 11.30am)

I don;t have a time they have to have breakfast by but i do have a rule that the first thing they eat (until lunch time) is breakfast stuff - be it cereal or toast etc... As long as they have some breakfast then they can eat something other than that. (hope that makes sense)

But as someone said do not go back on what you said and stick to your guns or it will happen again.

Bizzy I sit with the same situation a few weeks ago. Just a tiny bit different. she would ask for something and then end up not eating it so I just put it in the Fridge and when she was hungry again or it was the next mealtime I gave it to her and said she cant have anything else until that is finished. (yip I already know I am mean but she freaking asked for it)

Only thing I think I would have changed is DO NOT GO BACK ON YOUR WORD. Seriously whatever you do dont go back. They think they can just play you then and to be honest off course they can then. So dont threaten something you are not going to follow through with. If you said no food until lunch then no food.

However I suppose if you feel it was a bit too much and you said something in the heat of the moment. count to ten go back to him and say look I am getting a bit upset here that I am calling you for breakfast and you dont want to come. I expect you to at least sit at the table while we eat and if you dont feel like eating then that is fine but I am not going to prepare breakfast again.

If he does get hungry tell him to have a fruit or something. But I wont go out of my way to make him another meal.

Breakfast when I eat/make it. Usually around 8. Morning tea at 10am, lunch at 12pm & arvo tea at 3pm. Takes about three days for them to realise that you mean business. Up shot is he will know how to tell the time.

no, that is what I do, only breakfast only lasts from 7 til 8 in our house. If nothing is eaten then there is nothing until morning tea - about 10am.

The 6 yr old is giving me so much attitude lately, its driving me bonkers!

case in point this morning...

it was 9.55 and everyone else had had breakfast so i said to him come have brekkie, he said he wasnt hungry so i said come have it now or theres nothing till lunch time... (i am sick of breakfast lasting half the morning!) I told him that a couple of times and he replied he wasnt hungry every time. Less than half an hour later he comes into the kitchen saying he wanted breakfast!!!! I tell him no and he gets angry at me - i try to talk to him about it and he goes into his room, i threaten no tv all day and he yells "I dont Care". Meanwhile the other one decides he wants toast now too! I say to the 6 yr old did you hear me say eat now or nothing till lunch.. he said he did but still wants breakfast. gah! i feel bad hes going to be hungry and say he can have rice bubbles or cornflakes or toast with toby. he wants the choc chex (i buy one treat cereal per big grocery shop). i tell him no cause thats a treat and i have already gone back on my word... he throws himself on the couch and starts grumping.   Now he and toby are eating toast!

so tell me how badly did i mis handle that.. was it unreasonable to say eat now or nothing till lunch? of course the whole time this is going on he is scowling at me, grumping, refusing to look at me, trying to run away into his room or watch tv!

hes so stroppy! its like 6 going on 16! just shorter!
