Caleb is similar in terms of obsession with numbers and currently counts to about 50 randomly but counts EVERYTHING he can see especially when reading books. He randomly points at numbers and says 'that's a two' but I suspect this is a fluke rather than reading and recognising the digit. He also counts backwards with blast off at the end.

Once they get 20, 30, 40, 50 and up are all followed by 1, 2, 3 etc they can just keep counting up. It is more of a concept than learning higher numbers.

His latest thing is pointing out triangles and other shapes and he likes me to draw a shape and name it so he can copy it, or just asks me to draw circles or whatever shape he is currently obsessed with.

my daughter has just turned 2, and she has been able to count to 10 since she was about 20 months, she can now count to 15 but has not mastered her a.b.c's yet. When we are in the car she sees numbers on signs and calls them out. I was quite impressed with that, we also have a book with numbers 1-10 on each page. I can turn to any page and she knows the number.

I think every child is different, and they learn at different paces.

We are currently learning colours, lol like only picking the red tomatoes/grapes etc & leaving the green 1s.

I wondered this too BS. I thought maybe he is just memorising the numbers and I often joke he is no better than a trained monkey..but he DOES get the concept. He is now counting things and knows if you add one more that the number changes. just read an article in a mag last nite that talks of kids being able to know numbers and letters backwards and forwards but not having any high level of recognition of what they are (eg saying vs recognising)....interesting....

Lol Kylah does the same!

She can count to 20, read them out of order, spot numbers everywhere. When we are walking, driving or just at home she spots numbers. She can count backward and normally, and i can point at random numbers out of order and she knows them.

She is the same with the alphabet, knows them and reads them out everywhere. Tara - Ella is the same...has been counting to 20 (sometimes misses a couple) for a while now...and counted to ten very early on. She knows her alphabet perfectly too.

Most of her class can do up to 10 (they are aged 18 months to 3 yrs) and a handful can do to 20 no worries.

She has now started letter recognition - we do a letterland programme at daycare and she is doing that reading eggs free trial (on back of tots to teens mag) at moment and mastered thefirst level no worries....even told me I was being tricky tricky when I tried to turn the letters around on her! DOH! Maybe try something like that with him now too - recognition is important (as in seeing it and knowing what number or letter it is) - she can spot the letters (ELLA) from a mile away now.
(btw she is now nearly 3!!)

edited to add - look at some leapfrog stuff - their new text and letter things are awesome!

Tara, Tom is the same. He recognised numbers at about 15 months and could count to 10. He then started showing me all the numbers at the supermarket on prices etc. Now at 2.5 he can count to 20 (though he leaves one number in the teens out each time...and its a different number). He can count to 30 if I get him over the hump of 20. He recognises all numbers up to 12 written...havent tried any others...he may well know them.

He also knows his alphabet, can recognise all letters in upper and lower case. Can spell Tom, James and Nic, recognises ALL the names of his daycare teachers and most of the kids...ie he can go and get their name card and give it to them. he has started recognising small words when reading.

His teachers are also blown away by it.

I'm very proud

We do a lot of reading at home and he loves Numberjacks and word world which help.

He is OBSESSED!!! He would far rather play with magnetic letters than cars.

Liam can sometimes count to 10 with us prompting him. He's been trying to count to ten since about 15 months I think. He mastered that fairly quickly, but in the last 2 months he has really got it stuck in his brain. Like if we go the supermarket, hes pointing at the prices of things and telling me the numbers.

The only reason I was asking is that his playcentre teacher was absolutely blown away by him today (he's the youngest of the kids in the 2-4 section at playcentre), shes had to make him clocks and she said he's getting other kids to count more often. His teacher was just over the moon, as she said it was unusual for a boy.

The reason I ask is that Phoenix is OBSESSED with numbers.

He can count to 20 with ease and is currently learning counting to 30 with Mummys help.

He can count backwards from 10 (as long as he says BLAST OFF at the end).

He recognises all the numbers from 1-20 and can say them out loud if I point at them (in random order).

He can count my fingers. Also numbers on the clock.

This kid counts and repeats numbers every minute of his waking life. He is number crazy.

He's not quite there with the alphabet but he's getting pretty good at a few of the letters.

Not sure what the 'average' age is, but Harry counts 1. 2, 3 (like when counting to jump off a step or something). If he's counting lots of things he counts '2, 4, 2, 4, 2, 4, 2, 4' lol. Hi all. Been a while since I post but curious to know how everyones toddlers are going with numbers.

Ie. What age can they count to 10, 20, 30. Recognise written numbers. And if anyone knows how this differs from males to females.
