Evenflo Symphony Convertible Car Seat, Porter is best brand of convertible car seats so far.. It has infinite slide harness easily slides for an accurate fit every time. No reworking the harness as child grows. I use to support head of my baby well when he falls asleep.. It is very much comfortable ,easy to install and seems to be very safe.

Rear facing is awesome. I no brainer I believe. Anyone starting out in their research check out this website- the guy who runs it Hakan replied so promptly and thoroughly specific to my questions and vehicle. www.carseat.se . Sweddish site you can buy from and import yourself [they regularly ship to NZ and my friends seat only took 10 days to get here.

Also this site http://www.securatot.co.uk/rear-facing-vehicle-compatibility has good measurements to check it fits in your car [not and all inclusive list, but there is never such a thing anyway!!] Rear facing seats do take more room than other seats. My little girl is 2 1/2 and still in her Brio Zento. She knows no different and anyone who questions your rear facing toddler here is your answer!

"Children rear facing in an accident have a 50kg force on kneck, forward facing 300-320kg force " see rearfacing.co.uk for more info.

Give me two broken legs any day to a broken neck and or back.

Plunket seems to be coming up with some weird advice. If a carseat says suitable from birth, it's been tested with newborns and is perfectly safe! DD2 was just over 8lb and could have been a fair bit smaller and still been secure in the straps of the radian. Maybe it wouldn't have suited a majorly prem baby, but a regular-sized one is fine. And it was the same with the SnS convertible I had DD1 in from birth too.

As long as a carseat is installed appropriately it's fine. The challenge with getting a newborn in the radian is getting the 45 degree recline as not all cars are big enough for that.

I won't hire from plunket either - I couldn't trust that a hire carseat hasn't been in a car with smokers, for example, plus a couple of my friends are on the local plunket committee and tell me the carseats often go mouldy in storage and they just scrub them before the next loan. Not something I want to expose my wee girl's lungs to!

As far as I'm aware, the height limit is when the child's head reaches the top of the shell of the seat. This will be the same whether rear or forward facing.

Is there a height limit for rear facing (on the older style Radians) or is it the same as the height limit for FF? I've been through the manual and have concluded tht there doesn't seem to be one but just thought I would check to make sure I haven't missed it somewhere.

So would I be correct in saying there is a weight limit for rear facing that is lower than the FF limit but the height limit is the same?

I used a Safe n Sound convertible carseat with DS from birth and found it good, when the Radians came into the country DS was almost 6months so he was in that from then.
For this baby we will be buying either the Diono or importing a Two Way Elite for DS1 and putting the new baby in the Radian. I know T-Rex had her newborn in the Radian, you PM her of you wanted her advice on that.

I now work for Plunket and we recommend that you use a capsule for the first 6 months or so as the convertable car seats that go from birth usually dont cater very well for new babies, as the straps dont condense small enough. I would have a look at hiring a seat from Baby on the move or your local plunket car seat hire until bubs fits whatever seat you choose to buy.

And yeah I agree with the antental classes, you should limit your use of the capsule/seat to the car only. If you are going shopping then its much much better to either wear baby in a sling/wrap/carrier or to put them in a stroller lying flat. Capsules/car seats are not designed to keep little babies airways open properly so what happens is the slump down, their jaw disengages and their tongue covers their airway. You dont get this in a carrier or stroller!

I have a Radian seat and I love it! The new one is pretty awesome cause it converts into a booster and has high weight limits for RF, FF with a harness then FF booster without a harness. Just found this great thread and I'm sure some of you can help with my car seat dilemma!

I am looking at a safety 1st air protect which rear faces from birth-16kgs. It has a base it snaps on and off off so can be used with snap and go wheels (although antenatal classes have put me off using them - thoughts?)

Do you think this car seat really is ok from birth ? I had originally looked at radian's but the general consensus seems to be not to use them from birth?

Help! Every time we go to buy a car seat we get frustrated and walk away!

i looked into this too chuffed and basically came up with unless the car manual or carseat manual put limitations on it, it was ok. So I've left mine there. I'm not sure where this has all come from on Facebook but the law says install as per the manufacturers instructions and you obviously would go via your car manual. I have just spoken to another trainer for this and she had never heard of it and her first comment was they've made it up.
Many/most sedans have a fold-down armrest and this is not an issue: Simply fold-up the center position armrest and install the seat according to the instructions in the manual. As always, if for some reason the contour/construction of any vehicle seating position does not allow for a stable and secure installation, use a different location within the vehicle.

BUMP!!!!

How is everyone going with the rear facing? I have got a job now which means I get to spread the love, see below, I just copied and pasted it!

I have the fortune to be training to be a Plunket car seat technicion. I learnt a new piece of info the other day about putting rear facing seats in the middle of the back seats. If you have a fold down arm rest and the car seat does not cover at least 50% of it you need to remove the arm rest or move the seat away from the middle! I had to take my armrest out as my radian only covered about 20% of it and it could easily fold down and whack my girl in a crash. Please pass this on!

Did anyone else know about this? I'm proud to say we are now part of the Radian crowd! We got one of the ones Baby Universe were selling for $395. We have twisted the buckle the seat belt goes in to to. Thats good to hear that you got it sorted. Yes you can turn the female part of the seat belt up to 2 1/2 times, I have had to do it in every vehicle I have put a seat it. You can put the tether around the sliding rail of the front seat. The radian would have come with a strap that you can wrap around and it has a metal buckle on the other end for the tether to clip onto. Thanks everyone. It can't go in cente because there is an armrest which moves and then both front seats would have to move up. We tok it to plunket and they helped. It is more upright and fits better. We also twisted the female end of the seat belt to shorten it so we could tighten it without having it jam into the carseat and be loose (confusing I know!) there was no place to attach the tether. How old is your little one that you are trying to put in the Sportage? Did you try a centre installation?
The Kia's are generally pretty good for installs so it may be that you need to use a few tricks for getting it in more upright as long as your child is old enough.
Where in NZ are you as there might be somebody who has experience with the Radian who can give you a hand with the install.

Pretty much what Wriggles said. Try center position or having it more upright....that's if you don't need it at newborn position.

You can adjust how you put it in the car. Try putting it in the centre of the back seat. Also as you put it in, dont put the boot bit fully into the back of the seat, so it sits up more. Lol that is terrible I know.

Sunshine Kids/ Diano (sp?) are bringing out a new foot that goes on the base so they sit more upright, I think they are due in very soon.

We bought radian and it doesn't fit in our 2008 Kia sportage! Well it sort of does but the front passengers knees would be in the dashboard :(. Did anyone else have this prob? What should we do? there was a recent accident in the USA one child RF (almost 3) and 2 children FF.

Ive heard that RFing babies dont break their legs, your more likely to break them FFing.. Deb I say to people don't feel sorry for my child cause her legs maybe cramped if she was uncomfy she would tell me..but feel sorry for the 22 month old who broke her neck and ended up in a halo from being in an accident whilst FF.

Yeah my DP would probably be one of them, not on TM but just in general. He thinks she's old enough to be FF - won't watch any videos on it. I just have to say that their are so many idiots on trademe. They're constantly making fun of or having a go at people that do extended rear facing/harnessing and people that own Radians. They reckon it would be so uncomfortable for older kids to rear face and that it's going to cause problems with their legs/hips and some even think extended rear facing is dangerous. People they choose to do it have done the research and made an informed choice that they believe is best for their child. Why is that something to make fun of?? Why don't they have a go at people that don't even bother with car seats. It's really starting to annoy me. Hard to explain, you will see if you watch installation on youtube, but the connecting tether strap won't going around where the seat slides - the seat won't slide over the top of it and cut it. It goes under that pulls towards the car seat, so away from where the seat will slide. Check the railings first to. High9 - the seat doesn't have to be tethered. High9- You can google Radian installs to see what cars they fit in. They pretty much fit in most cars.

You do not need a tether bolt as it comes with a strap to tether it to the front seat rail (the bit the seat slides back and forward on). I have my seat installed in the middle with the strap going down and around the passenger side rail no worries.

Has anyone had any luck installing a radian in a Hyundai Accent (year 2000 model)??

I have just got a new car. Was going to be getting a much bigger car but this car got all the ticks. We're putting a radian on lay by this week but a bit worried it may not fit? I don't know! DP is a big guy so won't be driving the car as he can't drive a manual anyway but he's 6'2 so needs the seat back all the way and he's also quite 'heavy' so even then it's a bit tightish...

Ideally I'd love the seat in the middle but I have to get a tether bolt installed (or does it not require a tether?) but will have to settle for the sides probably...

Otherwise I guess DP can just sit in the back (which he has been known to do as I sit with the seat as far forward as it goes (haha).

Well, I just ordered one. (As well as a lot of other stuff we didn't need ). Wasn't going to order one until Willem was closer to 1, as our capsule is one that goes until around 13kg, but don't think I will get a better deal than that one.

Had to settle for the Eclipse. First choice was Ventura and second choice was the Flora. Both sold out at that price though (and think that would have been the case even if I had waited to see if there were any with the other suppliers she talked about). put it this way my daughter is 3 years 8 months and approx 18.6kgs and still Rearfacing in one she is approx 104cm.

I have the flora (I think - the green floral one) and the ventura. DD eats on the way home from daycare most days and the flora cleans up really nicely, with just a spot clean. Hi ereynolds. There are a few rear facing car seat options out there now which is awesome.

Radian of course being one of them. The cosco is also a great seat. You can buy that almost anywhere like Warehouse and online stores.

So glad I've found this thread! TBH I never would have thought to look under 'In the News'- its one of the forums I never go to!

Is the catalogue under Child restraints.co.nz the only list of extended rear facing carseats?
We currently have an Evenflow Tribute (listed under this catalogue) but a very tall 10 month old who is nearing the height limit for rear facing. We are starting to look into other carseat options but dont really know where to start- we were lucky enough to qualify for the plunket/trusts carseat scheme in our area and we got our Evenflow seat for a $30 donation. Of course, this means that we actually haven't looked into carseats at all...

Got it dry and back in the car. When I leaned on the seat to fasten the seat belt, I must have pushed moisture out cause it left a fresh wet patch. Man it really must be thick stuff.

When I washed mine I just rinsed it in a bucket with water and the ring thing come out easily. DH took the cover off yesterday for me to hand wash. He said it was quite difficult.......well he didn't use the manual at first though lol.

DD leaked through on to the cover so had to wash it, but I can't get rid of that ring like stain. No discoloration, just a mark like ring which is really annoying. Any ideas on how to get rid of it ladies?

Deb thanks for the link. I love the colour and style we chose so don't really want to have to order another, but its good knowing I can if we want to.

I have washed my Eclipse before, its super easy to take off. The Eclipse is the same fabric as the Nitro (i've ordered a Nitro) and yeah that's what i've heard about that fabric Kazper. Oh well if i really don't like it i'll get a different cover at some stage.

We have the Eclipse one and its the funny material where things could easily get stuck under the fabric if you know what I mean. Luckily we haven't had any spills in it and it looks pretty easy to just remove the cover and throw in the wash.

I was going to get the Ventura for my son but couldn't since they were sold out and then i thought he'd probably make it grubby really fast anyway since it's a light colour. So i got Nitro but i've read some not so great things about the fabric. I may need to get another car seat next year because my parents are probably going to be doing some picking up and dropping off at daycare. Definitely eyeing up another Radian. Which one to pick though... hmmmm. I've got Flora already, and my mother will probably want the pink one. Haha, it's just a bit much for me, but we shall see, it's ages away.

EDIT: Oh, I see you say there will be new prints in September. Choices, choices!

Well since he'll be FF it doesn't really matter. He should have plenty of room to grow FF. He may be 106cm long but how long is his body in relation to his legs? I would see if you can try him in one before you buy one as he might still have a while. Esmesmum the tether on SnS are such a pain. We had one when our son was younger and i hated the tether when it was RF. Good idea about the layby. IRD said it'll be paid by the 18th which is tomorrow, so i'm hoping it'll be in tomorrow.

NM my son was 106cm last time we measured him. So yeah he probably wouldn't have much room height wise either then.

Can't wait to get the seats! Deb DD was 20 months on the 2nd she was in a safe n sound meridian AHR. The radian is way easier to get her in and out of. Deb- You can fit the Radians three across the back of most cars when they are either RF or FF. You can even put your DS RF as well (if he is under 20kg), I would try it and see if he now likes it, he will probably be able to see more now that he is bigger.

Thought i might join in this thread!

With my son i changed him to FF at 10.5 months because he hated RF and would just scream whenever he went in the car and i didn't know about the importance of RF. My daughter will be 20 months on the 26th of this month and i still have her RF. She has a Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite which i hate! It doesn't fit very well in our car and i find the straps are a pain in the ass. So i'm looking at getting her a new seat and my son (3y 9m) needs a new seat too. I've been doing HEAPS of research on car seats and extended harnessing etc and i think we've pretty much decided to get Radians. Got a radian yay! I was expecting to find installing it tricky but found it relatively easy. In saying that I looked at videos and found a few install threads that helped too. Bowie look on youtube. There are clips in there with people actually installing their radians. I used that for help as well as asking questions.
I was lucky with tethering. When I pulled the plastic bit of the front seat runner there was a place I could clip the tether on to without having to use the strap, but when I use it in my mother's car I use the strap no worries.
