I had a bit of pressure from the family (not mine LOL) so I gave it a go but I wasn't ready to give it 100% and it all got very tense and messy. I waited 2 more months and then I was finding it hard to change her as I was quite PG. Once I was totally committed she had no 1's sorted in 2 days and no 2s after a month. DD was 28 months. I know lots of children who are well over 3 and not ready so don't worry about it.

You will know when she is ready and she will let you know. I am a firm believer in waiting until they are ready and willing. Having a potty there is fine, and showing her what it's for is good, but let her lead the way.

I had so many people try to pressure me and push me into toilet training my three year old and he just wasn't ready. I listened to them and tried and it just ended in tears for the both of us.

Then a week before he turned three, something just clicked and it's now been two weeks and he's almost fully day trained. Poos and wees, without prompting. I attribute that to waiting until he was ready.

20 months is still quite young. It sounds like she's not ready yet. Wait a few months and try again and see.

Good luck! :D

I took the "she should be TTed" comments to heart with DD1, and forced it on her as I was a young mum and thought that I was supposed to make the call. We still occasionally have toileting issues with her now, and she is 6.5!!!!!
We bought a potty for DS, but he isnt really that interested atm so we are just leaving it for him to make the call.

She is quite happy to sit on it (though not without her clothes on!) and has the general idea of what its for. I think she'll be like her big sister and prefer to go straight to the toilet though because thats what she sees everyone else doing. She tells me when she's had a poo, or when she wants a nappy change, but isn't quite ready to start using the potty/toilet just yet.

Spend time talking about what its for, but don't put too much pressure on the situation - it's a waste of time trying to train them before they are ready and just stresses everyone out.

Is she telling you when she is wet or dirty?

Good luck! Don't let others pressure you into starting if you don't think she's ready for it.
