This was my first cycle and I was on 300 puregon (same as gonal f) i think. FS wants quality not quantity and you never know what happens growth wise in a couple of days. Maybe you are a slow responder and you need the up to 250 or something like that. maybe speak to your FS. If you have too many follicles then you are at risk of OHSS.

Im the same we havent told many people not even our parents only bestie from NZ knows and 3 people from my work including good friend that has been through at least 25 IVF cycles and my manager who understands totally!!

Also if this is your first IVF cycle then the first cycle is more a trial to see how you are responding to the drugs and treatment etc. The FS only guesses your first cycle sees how you respond and then will up or decrease dosage accordingly.

I feel so darn isolated with this IVF stuff, I don't want to let anyone know we are doing it because we have been given so much grief over past conceptions (why don't you try this, and this, and this?) and miscarriages (did you do too much? what did you do to cause that?) and people who don't go through this just don't 'get it'.

I feel so together in myself when at work, like I am in control, and then I come home and start thinking and stressing and worrying! The only people I have spoken to is my SIL and one other very amazing loyal lifelong friend, SIL has been through IVF successfully (twins, now 4yo!) and my friend is just AMAZING with her support (she has had 3 children naturally but really tries to understand for me, bless her), but I still feel like I can't really 'talk' about it to anyone, and more often than not I shrug/laugh it off when either of them ask about progress.

Hubby is really awesome and supportive but I hate for him to see me getting wound up so I just potter in the garden or go for a walk to wind-down cause if he sees me upset, he gets upset too - he has been through so much I hate for him to get upset as well as we have just been through so much over the past 4 years TTC.

Edited by MaeBeeBaby

There are a few under-developed ones. What baffled me is that when I am on clomid (single dose) and get 5 follies, I am told I am an 'over achiever'. Yet when I have 5 follies with IVF, I am walking out of there feeling like things are not going as well as they could be. Yes I saw a different specialist who wasn't all gushy and informative, but still??? Thank goodness the nurse knows me well enough to see that I was visibly upset and whisked me into a different consult room and sat down and went through the computer notes and explained them further to me.

I am just clinging to hope that the fact that I don't have any problems GETTING pregnant will be my saviour with this IVF. And having an embie grow to 5 days just might be the key to it STICKING.

(Can you tell I am getting a bit apprehensive now the time is drawing near??)

Edited by MaeBeeBaby

They got 17 eggs which we were VERY happy about :D, 14 of which were usable, 12 of which fertilised, and 8 grew over the weekend to what we were told were "textbook" embryos!!! Had ET yesterday and now waiting until the 3rd :-)

I'm a mixture of emotions really, I am excited but also nervous as everything has gone so well and now it's up to my body to get it right. Am getting a little paranoid over what to eat and what not to, but I figure as long as I listen to my body I should be alright . Any tips?

Good luck for your BT melskee :-) Thinking of you.

With work it's not so bad cause I am able to choose whether or not I am around people, ie if I need a bit of 'me time' at work I just go into my office and close the door - everyone knows not to disturb me as I am the big boss's PA and have quite of bit of solo-time to sort stuff out for them. I work with a FANTASTIC crowd of people though, we have heaps of fun and laughter, so that helps me get through the day!

I am not sleeping so well either cause I am so uncomfortable. Really gutted that since I have been on burserellin (day 10 now) I have gained 2kgs but I think that's also cause AF is due today, plus lack of exercise and wanting to eat all my hubby's choc chip cookies that I made for him - that I usually don't like cause they are so sweet! (He has hidden the cookie jar now thankfully).

CHELLS - I am soooooo excited for you today chick!!! Please post when you are feeling up to it and let us all know how it went! xxx

Had another scan with FS today and he says the follicles are growing perfectly. I have 4 in one ovary and 5 in the other. He said they are all a good size and will scan me again on Monday. He said it is good that there is not too many as sometimes they are not mature. I am not too bad on the hormone injections just so so tired, bloated and stomach sticking out and slight nausea at some times of the day. FS said I have been reacting perfectly to the frugs which is all good. EC looks likely to be on Wednesday and transfer on Friday.

The other affects I had were nausea (lasted about a week) and bad headaches. Luckily all the symptoms were at different times. I am now 10 weeks pregnant and battling with morning sickness - trying to be extremely grateful for what I now have, but when you feel nauseated 24/7 it wears you down. I have had problems with bleeding since 8 weeks, but the 2 scans I have had show everything is OK. I am now 'discharged' from fert. assoc. since 8.5 weeks and feel a bit lost as I miss the close monitoring!

Hubbie injecting me fine enough but starting to feel it , slight headache, slight aching in the stomach which I suppose is the drugs doing their job!! almost like period pain to a certain extent - whcih is fine for me as I dont get much period pain. I also seem to have had all my energy zapped out of me big time and I think this weekend will spend majority of it inside on the couch and maybe a movie tonight. have a good weekend all. I dont seem to have any bruise marks so far which is good.

We are doing the Down Regulation Stimulation with the pill, starting when I first get my period in Feb 2011! I am so excited now to start, its not far away at all! Got the booklet to read over so I will be doing that this weekend plus I bought a book that Peppy recommended called IVF for dummies.
It was so good when I went to the appointment today cause I have learnt so much from these forums and from everyone elses experiences on here that I already knew a few things that she was telling us.

I am lucky that I dont drink tea, coffee or much alcohol.. The chocolate thing I dont think I can do hehe. I will also have to ask my naturopath what pills etc to keep taking during IVF, the nurse told me that they dont mind what I take as long as it doesnt affect my hormones. I will also look into doing accupunture as I have been told that it helps your chances, although the thought of needles in me scares me lol.
Bring on Feb 2011!!!!!

My FS doesnt like to do BT before starting injections he does scan so hopefully it is all good and I can start injections probably tomorrow. I have been on syranol spray anyway for past 10 days (I think in NZ they give you something different to halt the usual cycle injections maybe??). Pretty horrid taste! I agree I havent told many people at work only people that I need them to know so they understand when I need to see FS and have scans etc like this morning!!

Re costs we will be paying for the egg collections as we havent met our private health insurance time limit yet but nevermind. We will prob be out of pocket about $3500 for this fully stimulated cycle (including 1190 for fee for egg collection in day surgery) and future stim cycles will be around $2000 out of pocket. In aussie you can also claim back in tax any medical procedures over $1500 so any of out pocket we can also claim further on.

We havent bothered too much with acpunct, herbals stuff etc because when we discovered there was a poblem FS said IVF was only way to go. Both of us though have cut out caffiene - I have 1 coffee per week as a treat and hubbie has decaf latte couple of times a week whcih is pretty good going for us.

Have a good day. Wull update later tonight when I hear what the FS has to say and hopefully it is full steam ahead!

I am almost 39 as well so that gives me hope! I haven't lost 40kgs although I could do with losing 20kgs to say the least, 40kgs would be the icing on the cake... but even if I was in the correct BMI I would never get public funding in a zillion years because of my history of having had multiple mc's. I have a fabulous boss who I told at my 'interview' (I was already working for the company as a temp at the time) that I was going to do IVF at some stage and she's right behind me every step of the way! (I have a lot of 'physio' appointments coming up LOL!)

Poppy, I didn't get tested for auto immune disorder because Repromed doesn't tend to believe in it (so to speak) but are happy to prescribe the drugs to counteract natural killer cells as they are 'everyday drugs'. In my case my immune system needs depleting, not enhancing, I never get sick, if I am about to get a cold it lasts as a sniffle for less than half a day and I feel like crap then all of a sudden it's GONE. A few weeks after the quake we still had 2 other families living with us and all 5 adults and baby had the flu - I still carried on as normal.

Today was my first jab of burserellin - thank goodness I haven't lost my knack of injecting from all the months and months of using heparin during my IUI's and natural cycles! I haven't bruised 'yet' so let's hope the additional supplements I am taking which include Vitamin E (for bruising) keep all the nasty bruisings and haemotoma's away!

I'm almost 39 so I want you all to know that there is hope out there. We had to endure a long waiting time while I lost almost 40kg's BEFORE I could even go on the public waiting list - then another wait for the IVF. All my work colleagues, family and friends knew about the IVF. There is so much support and understanding when people know - you can be moody or depressed if you want to, leave at odd times to inject yourself, have all of those horrible side effects without people thinking that you are crazy, sick days for scans and procedures. It's amazing how many of my work colleagues have, or are going through the same thing as me!

Just what the FS suggested - we are doing ISCI. I think is what he recommends first of all and see what happens and take it from there.

I actually dont need a BT but am having a scan by FS on Wednesday with hopefully if ovaries have shut down as they should have then starting injections either Thursday or Friday.

Thanks Maybee for the info re the embyos something to keep in mind.

I havent told many people only manager and director at work, another person who went through it so many times!! and 1 close friend. We havent even told our parents - being over in aussie too makes it that much easier to - we dont get all the constant hassles about having kids etc. We would rather see what happens and take it from there.

I am a real career girl as well with senior HR job but starting to go through IVF has changed me. What is important is family, being in a loving relationship and having friends around. I am lucky I work in family friendly organisation (and acess to flexible working conditions and good paid M/L but when it happens I am ready to not be so committed - although saying that DH plans on being the main carer as I have better career prospects.

Have a good week all.

The reason for this is that on Day 3 the embryos are all similar sized. On Day 5 one is distinctly bigger, pretty much doing the 'pick me! pick me!' thing, because it's bigger and stronger than the others. By putting just this one strong one in, you have a good chance. If you put in two, the stronger one could overcome the other one, which could result in losing both via blighted ovum - so why take the chance, keep the other little embryo for another day if you 'happen' to need it... fingers x'd you won't though.

Some other family members are so far over the top they would just about come along to every blimmin appointment and listen into every phone call and also just about call the specialist themselves (ie my Mother!!!). Hope you all had a fab weekend.

Trouble, that's pretty exciting you're starting injections on Tuesday. So true about it being so real now. I've had good wishes from people on here but it just seems too distant and abstract at the moment (though it doesn't all start for me for two weeks). I dont think I really understand what I'm in for nor how I'll feel when I actually get AF and have to start ivf....though part of me thinks maybe I'll surprise myself with how well I handle it all.

As for telling people, I'm going to stick with the least knowing the better. As you said Tiff8ny, I don't want too many people asking has it worked. Have told a colleague I work closely with as we have some important things coming up which could well clash with egg collection or transfer so it'll give me peace of mind to know she'll sort things.

Kiwikt, sorry to hear about AF. I like you're attitude though. As you said, 'it's not something we can change so why get worked up about it'. When you're emotions don't overtake your thinking and you can rationalise the situation, it really makes life easier. In the 2ww and I start wondering if I'm preggers or not and look at every possible sign it's great to be able to say to myself 'whether I am or not, there's nothing I can do about it so just chill'!

Putting two embies back is pretty exciting, Trouble. We've talked about it as when we met up with one of the FS he seemed ok with the idea (cos were going private I guess) but we've decided against it. DP is tall and solid and was a huge baby and I'm average height and lightweight....scary!

Trouble, can I ask why you're doing a long down reg cycle?

Work over the weekend was productive but going to get through some more tonight...this forum is a great distraction though.

Edited by Peppy

Not sure when yet. I dont think it will be before Christmas.

Money isn't really the issue for us...my career is unfortunately. Timing wise if I am not pregnant by January we will be waiting until November next year so I am not on maternity leave at a critical time at work.

However, I am young, and we are fortunate enough to have the money in the bank to have at least another two goes at IVF if the FET doesnt work. That makes me feel very lucky.

Also on the plus side, because we wont need another full round of IVF until at least November next year DH has said I can use some of the money to finish off the house renovations...so new kitchen, updated bathroom and toilet here I come!

There isnt really a public system in AU - you pay privately but get approx 80% of it back which is pretty reasonable. Yeah my friend went through quite a bit. Although with the rebates etc cost about $40K all up. She had major issues and so did he and she had major cysts etc after every cycle had to have further surgery. We have just started on our first IVF cycle - doing down regulation - have been sniffing Syronal spray for last week or so and due to start injections mid next week (hopefully) and do egg pickup around 23th November. We actually havent told our families about IVF - I have about 4 good friends that know what we are going through - I am in a senior role at work so have told my manager who is great (didnt want her thinking I was off at job interviews when I needed to leave to have appointments) and have a good friend at work that has done close to 35 IVF cycles (although she and her husband had major problems) and has 1 miracle out of it so understands totally.

One thing I will say is that if you can and you have a good supervisor/manager tell them about what is going on - you will need time off to BT, appointments, specialists scans and dont be afraid not to tell them - if they are good they will understand especially if you are a person where the meds hit you hard (make you react differently t the way you normally are) - fingers crossed I am fine but dont know what the injections will do to me.

It took approx 6 weeks to have specialist appointment to start the treatmetn althogh over here there is more compliance like yuo need to do counselling, have police checks and child welfare checks (blame the gvmt for that stupid legislation) which has taken a bit longer.

Over here there is no waiting list and gvmt pays approx 80% of it so we were lucky that we could start straight away although we have been TTC for past three years and have found out DF has low sperm which is main reason why it hasnt worked. At least we are lucky in that we have a reason why its hasnt worked until now.

Now that we we have started the cycle I suppose it has hit us a bit more. I also believe that it has made our relationship a lot stronger doing this together.

Unfort we have a trip to NZ planned for early Decemebr so hoping that treatment will be on schedule and we can still go otherwise we will have to delay the trip.

Best of luck.

So much to tell you! Well, I'm not 100% sure of the exact cost for the cycle but we're budgeting $10,000. We rent so no mortgage to worry about which allows us to go private. That's great to hear you got on the waiting list much earlier than five years and Feb is not far away at all.
I know those feelings youre having! At the moment though I'm surprising myself with how calm I feel. I know we'll have such a higher chance next month than we have ever had over the past two years so that is reasuring. I have read a lot about the protocols - amongst other things theres a great book IVF for dummies that I got out of the library. For me knowing what's ahead gives me some control over our situation as being unexplained I have very little. DP had a very complicated op a few years ago with lots of complications so we learnt the hard way that we need to be knowldegable and not just rely on the docs for info.
We have told our parents that we probably need to do ivf but have only told my mum that we're booked in. They all just want grandchildren really and they're not phased by how they arrive!! As for friends, I only talk about all this with two good friends who have both had kids naturally but they are supportive and just listen - they don't offer advice!
I am working full time but will be able to get the days off I need which is great. I'm planning to get the majority of my paperwork all sorted by the time we start. Fingers crossed it all works out ( for you guys too in Feb) and we have the best Christmas present ever!
Thanks so much for your kind words.

Edited by Peppy

We originally got told we would have to wait for 5 years too but our specialist at fertility associates have managed to get us onto the wait list after 3years. We got told the wait list was 18 months which would of been Sept 2011 but we have been moved forward to Feb 2011 now which I am soooo happy about. We have our appointment next wed with our specialist to go over what the plan/protocol we will be using hopefully. I am picking since we are unexplained as well we will be doing the same protocol as you?
How much is your private cycle costing - if you dont mind me asking? We thought about going private whilst we wait but sadly we dont have the funds as just bought a house. But we figure feb is only just round the corner now.
I am scared, anxious, nervous but very keen to get IVF started in Feb. We feel like this is our only chance to conceive now so really want it to work but are fully aware that it may not, I dont even want to think about it not working though!
I will be very keen to follow what you go through with your IVF as seems like we will prob be doing the similar one to you possibly. I have no idea what is involved yet, guess we will find out next wed
How are you feeling about starting it? We are doing a private cycle. Being unexplained (I'll update my signature after this) I don't think I can wait for five years. We were going to wait till Jan/Feb next year but we got pretty frustrated and have pulled it forward. Kind of freaked out initially as DP is keen to get things moving but now I've got my head around it and I'm really excited.
Nice to meet someone in a similar position and totally understand about the amount of money that goes into this journey.
It is hard not knowing the reasons behind our infertility as you'd know. Have had an HSG which was fine. No PCOS or endo. DP has border line morphology but numbers are high. Have been seeing a great naturopath and had the whole array of tests - the odd deficiencies came up but they'll be sorted now with all the pills and tonics! Took antibiotics last month for ureaplasma and all clear now....who knows what the reasons are but there is obviously something not right. Fingers crossed our first ivf sorts it.
How are you feeling about starting ivf in Feb and do you know which protocol you're doing? We're doing the short one - antagonist I think?
