Nikki and mum2ET, Jody sounds like your good sleepers. I will give her a week or so to make sure she is feeling better and see if her sleep goes back to normal.
Tonight was the first time in a wee while that she went to sleep with no fuss, it is also the first time in the last few weeks that the hall light has been off. Her door is always closed but the light still comes under. Maybe she is calling out to me because of the light...?
Also, last night I sat in her room for a while to help her get to sleep, she kept looking at the light coming through the slightly opened door and wouldn't close her eyes until I closed the door properly.
Oops, I am off on a ramble!
Anyway, that you all for your replies, it sounds like if Jody starts waking and getting upset and scared then that is a sign of needing something such as a light.

My 6yo still has a night light. I guess she doesn't like sleeping in a totally dark room. DD has had hers because I thought it was cute It was one of the luxury baby items I allowed myself back then, as budget was way tighter but I loved the different colour glows. Nikki- Jake sounds very much like Ella in terms of his sleeping and staying in his room.

Ella's always had the door to her closed and it never occured to me before now to get a night light for her.

Jakes never had one and the only time hes asked about it being dark or having a light on was after being at my mums one night, who left the door open a bit so he had some light coming in (grrrr at nanny!) so I just told him its dark cos its nigh-nighs time and its meant to be dark ... and he stopped asking after a couple of nights. Not sure what we'll do re night time toilet training though - his naps are still very heavy in the morning, so I think that will be a while away.

ella's never had a nightlight and we have never needed one- I have a bedside touch lamp that I can put on really low if I need to check in on her.

Will probably get one through when we start night toilet training, just in case she needs to get up in the middle of the night.

DD started waking around 13 months with a horrible (im scared) cry. i started leaving the door open a bit with a light on & it stopped her waking. So since then she has had a night light.

BD is 21 months old and she has a night light. It could just be because she isn't well that she has been waking, but then again, it could be because it's dark that she gets a bit upset.

We got one from the Warehouse for $7. it's a plug in one that has a light sensor on it. Our DD (3) started needing/wanting it after our DD (11 months) came along. Hi our 21 month old has a Zoo Baby Turtle Night Light that we got from the Sleep Store. (Don't know how to do fancy linky-thing, sorry). It was $29.95 and is brilliant! It has a wee glow and doesn't get hot, 2 brightness settings and you can either leave it to stay on or leave it to go off after either 10, 20 or 30 mins (thus saving the battery). Our toddler loves it and even though it is a firm plastic he often sleeps on top of it, so it must be fairly cosy! He suddenly seemed to want a nightlight a few months ago and Mr Turtle has been a godsend.

Edited to answer your questions, sorry!.... i don't think it would be a fire hazard since it doesn't heat up and we have ours set to go off after 10 mins anyway (he can just turn it back on if still awake and it goes off in another 10 mins after that, if you get what i mean). And the battery has lasted ages so far. And yes i think toddlers often do suddenly need a bit of light when they are going to sleep or wake up in the night. Funny wee things....

DD has this oneexcept in penguin. I want hedghog for DS!
It's a wee glow, multicolour, and doesn't heat up at all. I'm not sure she'd notice if we were to take it away, I'll test when DS comes along. (They make wonderful midnight feed lights)

It's a plug in one, but it has an internal battery that charges up, so it can run unplugged for 8hours.

Both of ours have a night light .. however that was more for our benefit so I could see them lol.

Jody has started waking not long after falling asleep at night and calls out a few times during the night (most of the time she will settle herself back to sleep). She has been sick for the past few weeks though.
Her day sleeps are ok, considering she isn't well.
Do many toddlers suddenly need a night light at this age?
Are they any kind of fire hazard?
Can you get battery operated ones? Do the batteries go flat really fast?
