We've got a Macpack Vamoose. We've used it from when DD was 6 months old. I now find her getting a little heavy for long walks, but DH absolutely loves it and carries her in it for hours on end.
I'm a big fan of slings, moby etc, but I found the backpack very good because it has got a proper harnas which adds to carrying comfort. It is also very handy for when we go to the library or shop because you can put quite a lot in it.
DD loves it and often drags it out of her room when she wants to go to the beach .
It was very expensive (I think it was trhe most expensive item we ever bought for her ), but it's been well worth it, as we live by the beach and used it so much in the past year. It was also invaluable when we were on holiday.
Oh, and of course it's great that DH can carry her (instead of me). (My DH doesn't like using a sling, but he's a keen tramper and loves his backpacks).

Btw, you'll probably be able to get a secondhand one on TM.

Not tramping, but I've spent hours doing cattle work with DD in the Manduca, and at the end of it she's happy and I'm still pretty comfy. Only thing is it can get a bit hot for her if I start working up a sweat, cos she sits directly on my back. It's also a pain in that I have to take her off to put a sweatshirt on/off. Maybe I should get some arm-warmers

So yeah, I do have to think about what to dress us both in when I put it on for a long period (I don't want to wake DD if she nods off). We have an Elite one (proper tramping harness) - hiking one rather than a semi-structured carrier. We really like it. DH finds it very comfortable for 3 hours or so, there's space for food and drink and it comes with a sunshade. We started using it at about 6 months and Dan was out in it today for 3 hours at 2y3m and loves being in it. So, there's been lots of discussion recently about Manduca/Ergo/MeiTai type carriers, but what I'm needing is one to go hiking with. They're mega expensive so I want to get it right. Obviously I need to try them on to make sure they fit properly but anyone had any good/bad experiences or found anything particularly handy about theirs?
