That shot was my first go in the cloths but she was still too small. I think it was another couple of weeks that I used them full time.

Okay, here's a series of shots of the way I use prefolds. It looks easy because it is!

She's just gone up into the mediums so they look pretty bulky on her, although they are a bit of a bulky system. But because of that I found that for night time I could add heaps of boosters to make the nappy last longer.

I used bummi's super brite covers mostly in the smalls. They have a double layer of elastic at the leg to prevent leaks. I NEVER had a leak with them no matter how big the wee or poosplosion. I also used the standard bummi's wraps and they were good but I got the odd leak out the leg - although as you can see my girl is still lean. I'm sure other brands would also be fine but I never tried any other ones.

I should add that friends swear by the snappy/whisper wrap combination, particularly to catch poo but it looked way too complicated for me during the night and my BF would NEVER have worked it out.

Hope that helps.

ETA: I just had to add a nice photo of Kiara since those ones (particularly the prem one) were not very flattering on her.

Edited by thesaff

    Author: luvmylittlies
Subject: 36732
Posted: 18 November 2010 at 9:26pm

MF I'll take some photos for you of the prefolds and how they go on the kidlet tomorrow (attached to the pump at the moment). But as Janini said, if you go to the snazzipant site I think they have photos as well.

Basically they're just a rectangle of several layers of cottony material. They make them so they're thicker in the middle (more layers). You can just fold them into 3 then lay them in a waterproof cover that velcro's up at the front or do a flashy fold with a snappy (instead of a safety pin) and use a pull up cover like an old fashioned pilcher. You don't have to wash the covers every time, you can just air them out provided they don't get poo on them.

I used prefolds as my main system for smalls. Just used to fold them in 3 and lay them in a bummi cover that velcro'd up at the front. Very reliable, easy to add boosters when needed (eg at night) and a cheap (ish) way into cloth nappies. Although they're bulkier than lots of the other types. It certainly worked fine for us. We didn't start using them though until Kiara was 3kg so we had about a month I think in sposies but haven't used one since.

Oh, I just remembered I have a photo of Kiara when I first put her in them....now where is it....oh yes, here it is. It's a dreadful photo of her and she was only 2.3kg in this shot so even the smalls looked massive on her.

Edited by thesaff

(next baby I think I'd be better prepared to start at day 3)
Check out snazzipants website. click produts, prefolds.
It shows you how they go on, and what a snappy is.
Lots of people swear by old fashioned cloths, but I never tried them so can't coment. (they use old fashioned cloths instead of prefolds)

I prefered prefolds and covers for newborn, as you are changing them quite a bit. You can reuse the cover (air between uses) to save on washing. And velcro is great as it give a really good fit. I found snaps a little difficult at that age esp if they didn't have leg snaps. I couldn't get a perfect fit and the nappies would leak.

So anyways, hope that helps and I haven't confused you more.
