We used the little bamboo fitted nappies from Jan at YoYo nappies - they aren't too bulky, but the bamboo fleece soaks up loads and Jan's covers make sure that you never get any leaks on to clothes or bed, even overnight.
She fit them right up to about 2 1/2 months old and could probably have gone longer as well - Jan does a hire kit for her newborn nappies.

We did the same, bought a big stash of prefolds while pregnant with DD, but she just soaked thru them so quickly and would get nappy rash (we did try using liners but found them more trouble than they were worth with newborn BF poo!). From what Ive read prefolds are great but you need microfibre or fleece against bubs skin to pull the pee moisture away from his bum, the cotton prefolds will then absorb it.

Also maybe look into Bamboo or Hemp pocket inserts? They can go behind your cotton prefold, adding absorbancy without the extra bulk another folded prefold would add and are super absorbant.

Plus you will definity use them later on inside your OSFA pockets so isnt a waste of time/$$$ Ive seen them fairly cheap on TM, just rememer to wash them a few times coz they take a while to reach full absorbancy.

How many prefolds are yu using? I found one prefold wasnt enough for my heavy wetter. Prefolds are only cotton and although very absorbant theyre not as absorbant as say bamboo or hemp or microfibre.
I used a combo of these inserts with my newborn boy to see which worked better.
Cotton and Microfibre are fast absorbers so they are great to catch that first burst of wees but they dont lock it away so the nappy lasts longer and thats when hemp or bamboo does the job.

I've tried them snappied and tri-folded, mostly trifold for the extra absorbancy.
Good point about the cloth liners, I did have some microfleece ones floating around left over from Benjy. Will try those. I bought a whole bunch of prefolds and wraps for Jack before he was born but he is such a heavy wetter that they're just not working for us.
I have to change them at least hourly to prevent a sore bum and even then it is usually already really wet!
Ittis are better for absorbency but don't fit him well around the legs.
I have a couple of awesome osfa pockets that work and fit great but they aren't practical for a full-time stash until he's a bit bigger, as they're quite bulky on his teeny frame.
