I went to a safe to go techie (through plunket) today and my DDs straps are tight enough and in the right place etc so not much more i can do other than get a new seat with straps she can't get out of. Can't afford that right now, so will have try the safety pin thing. She's also another one that contorts out of any seat belt, have yet to find one thats hold her in.

There should only be enough room for two fingers between the harness strap and your child’s chest. People often worry that the straps are too tight but if you don’t feel compression, the harness isn't tight enough.
Adjust the straps to accommodate the child and make sure they lie flat against the child's body. are you sure? i dont remember having to have the straps below the shoulder when mine rear faced?

maybe the straps are too high up then.

If she is rear facing the straps need to be below the shoulders, they only go above the shoulders once you turn them to forward facing. Any sort of chest strap needs to be at armpit level to be safe. What kind of car seat do you have? The Radian XTSL has 2 clips and the main one is a challenge for adults to undo at times!

This is getting beyond a joke. I had to stop the car at least a dozen times on a (normally) five minute journey this morning - at this was with the houdini on!

I don't think the straps can go on any tighter, but I am thinking that she might be too skinny for the carseat - where the straps join the top of the carseat may be to far apart.

I'm a bit reluctant to turn her carseat around, as she is only 8kgs. I was going to suggest the Houdini strap. Worked with my boy. I'm impressed she can get it open.

DD is nearly 2 and we have been battling for a month or two now to keep her arms in her straps in her carseat.

I tried the black plastic 'sleeve' thing that goes over both straps - she just kept pulling it down and getting her arms out. This morning I went out and brought a 'houdini' attachment, and she worked out how to get it undone in about 5 minutes!

She is very slim and a bit of a contortionist - she can wiggle out of supermarket trolley and pushchair straps no matter how tight you make them.

I think she might be a bit bored as she is still rear facing, but even giving her toys etc doesn't seem to distract her for long.
