They've only got some of the test results back, nit the day 2s or the sperm analysis which is why I was so shocked that she leapt straight to the big guns. She didn't mention clomid or any other treatment than iui/ivf.
When we go back after the next round of tests I'm going to ask about clomid and any other possible options that aren't so insanely expensive. Obviously if they're the only way to go then well cross that bridge when we get to it.
Thanks for the encouragement/ heads up about other options. Will be interesting to see how we get on at the next appointment!

I understand why you would have taken it pretty hard, they are fairly blunt (in a "trying to be caring" kind of way) and honestly, it sounds like you got the same story I got. Basically we don't qualify for public funding yet, because of having one child, so have to have been TTC for 3 years before we're on the list, so they pushed BIG time for the private cycles of either IUI or IVF, which is money we just don't have.

Did the blood test results and sperm analysis show up anything, or did they not have the results yet? If they didn't even have the test results, they shouldn't be telling you that the only way you'll conceive is to pay privately for IUI/IVF, and unless there are sperm issues, clomid is usually the first port of call. Did they pass any mention of that at all?

It may be that you end up using IUI/IVF, but I just want you to know that it's not the ONLY option available to you. I know exactly what they're like, and they are in the business of making money by helping people conceive, so unless you qualify for public funding now, they will push and push the private funded stuff on you, and make it seem like you won't conceive without it.

And unfortunately because DF has 2 children under 12 with his first wife and we have them 'too much', we don't qualify for any public funding so will need to come up with the money somehow. Argh!

Maybe I was expecting too much, and DF thinks I was being a bit naive to not expect IUI and IVF to come into the conversation, but the only info I got was a sheet on what to expect with an HSG so I'm a bit stunned. Didn't help that on the way to the appointment ran into 2 friends who are both due in the next month, and then had a baby shower today for a third. Eek!

So anyway that's where things are at, it's a bit overwhelming at the mo. Hope you all have a good weekend.

I found that going to FA was the best step for us. They did an internal ultrasound (which you get used to after a while), they get other tests done. They got me onto monitoring where they do bloodtests through the month and a scan to count your follicles and then tell you when the best time to TTC is. We're still trying but it is good to get information to help with the TTC journey. Good luck :)

As you can self-refer here for a free initial public funded consultation, that's what we did. The wait for the free appt was only 6 weeks.

They sent us out several forms to complete, both for DH and I. Medical history, etc. Plus some forms to get blood and sperm tests done before we saw them. The tests the female does need to be done on CD3 and CD21 (or 7DPO if you don't OV on CD14). The man's sperm test can be done at any time, though there are abstaining guidelines, ie; how many days for him to not BD before getting the test.

When we went to the appt, they ran through our test results, and were about to start us on clomid, but did an internal scan to rule out cysts, and found 3 so hence the clomid didn't happen, and we were put on the public waiting list for a laparoscopy instead. Which took 6 months to happen.

We've seen VP Singh at FA in Hamilton.

Edited by ooligator

They did an internal scan (ovaries, uterus etc) and asked about periods, general health etc. They then gave us suggested tests to do - for me it was an HSG (xray of fallopian tubes) and a post coital test (which we didn't do). The tests they suggest will probably depend on your situation though.

Good luck!
