a little bit of white vinegar in a rinse helps too. I have the same with our nappies. Every now and then they end up having a dryer dry for various reasons (we don't have a dryer either) and it softens them up a lot for a while.
Also make sure they're totally clear of detergent. I find cansteen softens my nappy wipes and inserts. Yeh i'd finish them in the dryer. Our towel towels are always really rough because they're line dried. Maybe dry them in the dryer on low... I always dry our towels in the dryer because otherwise they go stiff and crunchy...probably the same with nappies made out of towelling.

My main nappies are fitted towelling ones called Mother-ease (US) and lately they seem very 'crunchy' - anyone know how I could soften them up without using the wrong chemicals?
