I am actually not so keen on it myself, and would rather try other things first - I have PCO, so he would book me in for a lap under public funding and do it then if i wanted, but the thing is that I would be eligible for IVF at about the same time as my turn would come round on the waiting list for the lap. And he doesn't want to try any of the other drugs available apart from clomid, whereas my other specialist was going to look at FSH injectables etc. I am just so confused!

On the other hand, it would be worth asking your Dr why they're suggesting that over IVF? When I talked to my Dr about it, she was pretty clear that IVF had a better success rate, and they tend to cost a similar amount (ovarian drilling may be a teensy bit cheaper, but only by a grand or so, and when you're paying that much money I'd tend to go for the option more likely to be successful). They did it for me because I was having a lap anyway for endo, so it didn't end up costing me anything. If you're in that kind of situation, I'd say go for it, and give IVF a go if it doesn't work. If you're looking at paying, I'd lean towards IVF unless my Dr had really good reasons for recommending the drilling.

Like Noodle, post surgery my bloods showed no activity so we added 50mgs of clomid into the mix. And ovidrel, and progesterone. Bang; pregnant on the first cycle I actually ovulated, and had a long enough luteal phase. And that was our wonderful DD. Recovery from surgery wasn't too bad. I think I found the recovery from the general anesthetic the hardest bit, but that could have been because I was doing massive hours at the time so was tired anyway.

Best of luck to you!

On a side note, Hopes, I was never warned that it could make things even more difficult in the future .

    Author: Hopes
Subject: 39655
Posted: 24 June 2011 at 12:58pm

Yes - we were in a very similar situation to you re the clomid not working at all. I also have endo, which was getting quite painful by that point, and my Dr was worried might also be causing fertility problems. So she booked my in for a lap operation for that; as it's a medical problem my insurance covered it all. Because she knew about my PCOS and that we were trying to conceive, she asked if I'd like her to drill my ovaries while she was in there. I told her to go ahead and she did.

The photos she gave me after the surgery looked scary (poor little ovaries with 14 holes in each one!!), but the recovery wasn't too bad. I don't have anything to compare it to, but from what I've read here it was pretty standard for recovery from lap surgery. They did the surgery on about day eight or nine of my cycle, and I kept temping to see what happened. Nothing did for a while, then I ovulated really late (well, late for a standard cycle, since I hardly ovulated at all beforehand I didn't have a 'normal' to base it on). And that was the cycle we found we were expecting Jacob, so I never got a period after that

All in all, it was a magic bullet for us. I'm sure it can't work the same way all the time, but I'd recommend it!

ETA that we had been warned that ovarian drilling can scar your ovaries, meaning once they have healed it can be even harder to ovulate. That was very obviously not the case in our situation, I ovulated first cycle after my period came back with Jacob (again, very VERY late this time, if I'd got my period my cycle would have been two and a half months long I think). I'm not sure if the ovarian drilling was still helping at all (I imagine it would have all healed over by then?), or whether being pregnant and having a baby helped change things.

Edited by Hopes

I had the ovarian drilling done and got pregnant 4 or 5 months later. I did do another round of clomid though but bloods came back that my body wasn't responding either so left it a couple of weeks did another blood test checking estrogen, progestrone and pregnancy and all came back that I wasn't doing anything so they got me to do a round of provera to bring on AF so did 10days worth and AF never came. I now have a 2 and a half year old as a result of all that non responding...I still wonder how all the blods showed nothing happening but I managed to get pregnant. As for the op I was a bit sore for a few days after but it didn't take long to feel normal again. Hope all goes well for you chick and you have that BFP soon! hugs hun!
