Ok made a decision, thanks to BOTM I have decided on a Brio, fits behind hubby safely and will RF for long enough for us :-)

Another idea, if anyone has any thoughts on this...

Do you think I could have Radian in LH side, with Meridian in the middle? Its for a 97 Sub legacy s/w. Just concerned the Merdian might be too wide for middle & being hard-up against the Radian. My brain has gone fuzzy from too much thinking, so hope this makes sense!

I just e-mailed the importers of the Radian and they say they hope to have the wedge in the next 1-3 months, they are currently working with the US supplier. SKJP is sunshine kids maker of the Radian. SKJP to access the NZ site. So if you email them, you will get a hold of the NZ owner/supplier. And she may be able to help with an install.

squoggs, are you in Auk? You could see if the lady from SKJP could try installing it in your car. As they obviously know all the tricks to getting a good install/more upright install. Might be worth emailing them to see what they say? Or have you tried your local botm? I was driving a car once that the head rest was off, and was in a Police breath test thing. And they told me off, and said to put it back on, for above reason. So I guess its not "illegal" but when you think about it, it is there for safety. Apparently Diono said around Oct in USA. So it may be around Dec/Jan here in NZ. I'm guessing when the new Radian RXT arrives in NZ. But I'm not sure.

Yeah, its definitely not a good idea to take the head rest off. If you were in a crash, then his head would fly back and snap his spinal cord.
If you find later on, you need a more upright install then Diono (the new name for Sunshine Kids) are bringing out an angle wedge, which goes on the opposite end to the rf boot. And will help create a more upright install.

Dont take the head rest off! Its there for a reason, and if you have a crash the car seat will slam into the back of his neck. Yeah I had it installed by botm. It is solid at the belt path, so technically its safe. But yes it could be a better fit for different cars. I have a cosco for my mums car. We have a brio, as couldn't get the radian rf in our car. But I have to say I do not like the cosco. It doesn't tether when rf and it feels really flimsy. There is no movement at the seat belt path, but if I wobble the top of the carseat, it pings back and forth really easily. I am very tempted to replace it as I just am not happy with it.
Lots of people have this carseat and are happy with it, so I don't know if its that they haven't tried something more solid like a brio or radian or that it has a slighly better install in there car.
The cosco definately doesn't take up as much room rf as a radian. Not sure about your legacy is but we found in our 98 legacy that the only position we could get the radian installed securely was in the middle seat. No matter how hard we tried it just wouldn't go in the outboard seats. (love the radian in all other aspects though and have since bought a different car so doesn't matter so much). Haven't heard of the same problem with the cosco but have seen the radian/legacy problem on a few carseat forums. Just something to consider and check beforehand, whether the cosco or radian can be installed securely in your car - in some cars the cosco would be the better option as the installation would be better and vice versa. The Radian is one of the narrowest seats around. It does take up a bit more room tho cause its designed to rear face for longer.

As Girls Rock said have you thought about putting the RF one in the middle? It is the safest place in a car and usually you can get the front seats another click back. i always used it RF in the centre so the seats could be as far back as poss.. I used the FF behind the passanger or drivers side. I had a bolt put in the centre back for when cosco has been FF in the centre at times.
have you thought about RF it in the centre?

plunket should have both models, do you have one in your town to try the seats before you buy? but less pressure than say baby on move who are sales people/agents.

Im tall and always have the drivers seat as far back as it goes and dont remember it being a prob when she was in the middle. I wouldnt have her behind me.

My forrester is "shorter" in the distance between front & back seat than my friends legacy.

Thanks Girls Rock, really helpful info :-) How do you find it in regards to pushing seat in front of it forward? Cos if we have #2 in our SnS, and #1 in the new carseat which pushes the seat too far forward, my husband won't be able to drive our car! We have a legacy wagon, so about the same size as a forrester, maybe slightly bigger

ive got the cosco and its very narrow.high based so fits very well with 2 other seats in the back. I have used it both RF and FF and with a mix of dif seats across the back seat of my subaru forrester. I think its a fab seat for $199 and the independant click of the left & right straps makes it easy to use. the new black covers one out look lovely and plush.
