The lady at the garden centre said to keep picking the flowers off them until labour weekend or they get worn out before the season really kicks in. It might vary by region though - that was for manawatu. This is the time of the year to be planting them out. I would weed around them, make sure they have plenty of fertiliser and let them do their thing. A good mulch of straw is good to keep the fruit away from the ground and to retain moisture.
