I'm in Wellington and normally grow leeks and carrots happily over winter. Kale is good pretty much wherever you are (it lives through anything in my experience!) Some onions are also good, though check variety. Also winter cabbages - so much easier than spring! If you are in Welly or north I'd guess you might still have time to get brussels sprouts, broccoli and  beetroot in - depends on when first frosts are though. Good luck!]]>
