After about 3 months the phase passed and the pebbles stopped coming in the car.... Hes now 2 1/2 and when hes tired he mucks around, mainly wanting to open and close the door himself, or try to seatbelt himself in, but thankfully DD has arrived and we have made it a game to race her to put your seatbelt on. Given shes in a capsule he never wins, but he keeps telling me he nearly beat her!

It was kind of embarrassing having to shove a struggling screaming baby into the car when there were other people around...but once he was buckled in he was alright again. I don't think the problem was the car seat or rear facing though, he just seemed to want to be free and outside for as long as possible. He's 19mo now and loves sitting in his car seat, especially when it's not even in the car (when we switch which car it's in sometimes it ends up on the floor in the living room in between switches). We didn't do anything special to "fix" it, just kind of put up with it until we noticed one day that he wasn't fighting it anymore.

Also a book with flaps, buttons etc, something that he has to interact with.

Good luck!

When my daughter got to this stage/age I had her enrolled into preschool 2pm-5pm 2 afternoons a week so she could have fun playing in sandpit/painting/playing with friends/getting read books, whilst I could do my errands/shopping without the stress, knowing she was having a fun time.

Anyway its a different suggestion to others take or leave it

Albeit, it could go on for a while yet

My DD has to do up her own buckles now (I always check). Also I can often distract her by talking about where we are going next. I also resorted to letting her have something to eat once she was safely buckled in sometimes too - good old bribery (although I was careful not to let that become an everytime thing).

As for the RF/FF thing - I got plenty of "oh, she just wants to be FF comments" too, and yet every other toddler in my coffee group went through the same phase despite them all being FF by 1. DD is still RF now at just over 2 and has got over that delightful phase just like all the others did. One of the things I tried that worked some of the time was I brought some new toys and books that were just for the car. I had them on rotation and every time I put her in the car I gave her a few new things to look at. One of the other things I do now (not sure how vocal your son is, my DD had a lot of words at that age but most don't) was ask her what music she wanted to listen to - I just gave her a choice between two things so wiggles or hi-5, or nursery rhyms or TV theme songs (Bob the Builder, Barney etc). It does mean I know a lot of the words to kids songs though... Basically the things toy or book to look at was to make the car fun and the music (and her perceived choice) was a distraction.

Hope that helps.

He's usually worse if I'm running errands and I'm having to pull him in and out of the car every few minutes. He squirms and arches his back, and is generally impossible. I really don't want to fight with him about it as I don't want it to become a negative experience, but I'm at my wits end as to what to do about it. He's usually ok if we spend a bit of time out of the car, but that amount is getting more and more. I can't spend half an hour at every place I need to visit when I'm out and about. It'd take me all day to get anything done!!

Someone please tell me this phase will be over soon!

**I should also mention that he's still RF, and I'm not planning on FF-ing him until he's reached the max for his car seat**

Edited by Meg10
