I can't really say how much is too much, is it upsetting you or is your mother upsetting you?
Ignoring it would be my first plan too.
If you think it's mostly caused by frustration of not being able to communicate then you could try teaching him some baby signs.
'Help' was the most helpful one for my girl when she got frustrated (pat your chest with both hands).
You don't have to use actual 'baby signs', I just looked up sign language and chose signs that looked easy and made up some too.

I just want to know, how much screaming/squealing is too much?

My DS has always been very screamy, reflux baby and very clever so frustrated a lot of the time. He screams and squeals a lot, either when he doesn't get his own way or can't touch something he wants, when he's excited, when he's frustrated or just at random sometimes to express himself. I have been ignoring it for the most part, and sometimes saying no firmly when it's quite bad. And I try to distract him when it happens. I have been ok with that but I can't help but notice he seems to scream a lot more than his other baby friends. And my Mum has been on my case about it saying it's not good and he needs to stop it.

So yeah... when do I need to be concerned? Shouting at him doesn't do anything except make him cry, ignoring him usually does work, and when I say no he tends to listen in the end. But yeah he's just a real screamer

ETA he can't say much yet but he really wants to so I'm sure that has something to do with it
