And she will come right on her own.
I would absolutely not make her clean up her own poo, or make things competitive for her, that is likely to make things a lot worse just be super posative when she does do a poo in the toilet and praise her good behaviour.

You can contact your GP and ask for a referral to your local public health nurse who will be able to help you if you get stuck.
Hope this was helpful!

I'm new to this forum but need help/suggestions... My 3YO daughter has been doing wees on the loo since 3YO and this seemed relatively straight forward. However had only done 3 poo's since then (6 months) and always does them in her undies. She will say she's going to do poo's and will go into her baby sisters room to do her business. If I try and carry her to the toilet she will just scream blue murder and not do anything. Have bribed with a soft toy (which is sitting in our wardrobe waiting), sticker chart (not using anymore as isn't working), made her clean her own poo up in the bath (this was a recommendation from Montessorie teachers as this is what they do) but this gets sooo messy even in the bath! I've now said to her that every time she poo's she gives one pair of her undies to her 18 month old sis and her sis gives her a pair of nappies. She's a competitive little thing but this is one thing she says her little sis will win. Makes me sad as she's just given up:( She does get extremely upset when she has to give her undies up (two of them are in her sis room now.... Gosh I find myself getting so annoyed at her and I need to find a way of making it into a positive thing but I have run out of ideas! Please help!

    Author: Mummyinc
Subject: 5363
Posted: 19 April 2015 at 8:49am

Hey everyone, thought id share what we did, My son was toilet trained by 22 months and over night from 23 months ( which is rare i have heard but he has always been pretty erm clean-o-phobic lol)
as soon as he started telling us he was going (about 16months), we had him nappy-less when we were at home at all times, literally got up in the morning and took his nappy off, and had the potty within reach, we resigned ourselves to the fact there would be accidents.

The biggest thing was cleaning up the accident with out ANY fuss, just say nothing and clean it up. ( hard to do sometimes) But if he even got a tiny amount of wee in the potty aka even a drip then we would make a huge fuss and do a special happy potty dance. We found that forcing him to sit on the potty at certain times of the day was just frustrating to all involved after all he DID know when it was coming because he had been telling us when he had a nappy on so was more about learning to trust him when he didn't have a nappy on.

at 17 months was the first time he voluntarily took him self to the potty to wee, then he regressed a bit at 18 months, and we had a few wee's accidents when we introduced undies at 20 months.

The overnight thing is a brain connection so cant be forced, we just noticed it had been a week with out him waking with a wet nappy so chucked a towel under him and put undies on him one night and that was all that was needed, he had maybe wet the bed 5 times since then and every time it was when he was about to get unwell so having a very deep sleep...

I cant stress how important it is to not make a big fuss, we freaked out a few times at poo on the carpet and this ment he took much longer to want to poo in the toilet, he is 3 soon and still sometimes asks to poo in a nappy. But not very often.

We started TT DD when she was 2yrs 9 months. She got wee's quite quick but poo was a completely different story. We tried everything but she kept doing it in her knickers. In the end there was nothing that I could do. I had to try (very hard) to stay calm when she had an accident, say next time we will try and do it in the toilet, and one day she just did it! It took a while to get my head around this as she is a smart cookie, but she just had to do it in her own time. It took nearly 3 months but she got there.

Hope you have been able to work something out and that kindy is going well.

    Author: Disco
Subject: 5363
Posted: 07 January 2013 at 10:12am

My daughter is now three and we're on our second round of giving toilet training a go. We started the first time just after she turned two, mainly because she kept taking her nappy off and expressing a lot of interest in the toilet. It started off well but wouldn't do poo's at all except in a nappy or her pants. This went on for a good 5-6 months and then she lost interest. There were other things going on and I fell pregnant with my second baby and the morning sickness was hideous so we gave up.

So now its summer again we thought we would try again. So far, she's really good at doing wee's, doesn't take her long to get it and only seem to have a few accidents which is usually if she's distracted in some way. But when it comes to poo's, won't go near the toilet. So at the moment she either waits until she's gone to bed and has a nappy on or goes in her pants, which is really unpleasant for whoever has to clean it up.

She's starting kindy in a few weeks and I am at a loss as to what to do. I've tried bribes, stickers, treats, toys, you name it. From what I've read this is a fairly common problem but if anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears!

disco

Last november we kept telling ds that he is a big boy now and soon he will be wearing underwear. Did that for a month and then took him to a mall and he helped us choose the underwear he wanted. Then we got home and he put them in the washing machine and by christmas he started wearing them. The five days during the christmas period we stayed at home and took him to the toilet every few hours. He seemed to have cottoned on , in that we will keep taking him and he needs to do either a poo or a wee. Was not long before he came to us saying "wee time" and it was bang on in accordance with the times we were taking him to the toilet. I guess each child is different but we did not have any issues at all thank god. what we do notice now though is that every time he goes for a poo, he tends to scratch his knees. (DS has eczema)

It's great that she tells you at all as my DD often won't even tell me if she's done a little in her undies. She used to go by herself but we had a setback and now she won't. I am trying to stop myself asking if she needs to go, and instead reminding her to tell me when she needs to go. The other thing we have are set times when she has to 'try' - before we go out anywhere, before her nap, before bed at night- so these times catch a few possible accidents.
Would love it if anyone has any tips though. We just started toilet training 3 days ago. DS is 2 1/2 years old. We have him in undies or nudie whenever we're at home. He is in a nappy in the morning at daycare (he goes to daycare 3 days per week) and then they put him in undies for the afternoon. He's doing ok. He's done a couple of poos in the toilet and a couple of wees. But we're mostly having accidents. I think Im going to use the wetness liner pull up nappies and see how he goes with those as he's just having too many accidents and there are wee patches all over the carpet. It feels like he's gotten worse as the week has gone on. Will give it another day and then try the wetness liner pull ups.
Has anyone else used those?

She finally told me poos before she needed to! She's 2yrs 3mths. We have to use pull ups at creche but she doesn't go while she's there and is always dry and she goes wees when we get home so thats all good. I normally leave the pull up on when we get home as she goes down for a nap not game enough to let her nap without one yet. And today she also ran off to the toilet at playgroup when I asked her if she needed to go. If she says toilet we take her plain and simple. I know sometimes its a game to her but thats ok would rather catch it then not DP even took her into the mens toilet at the shops today! Thats a HUGE step for him lol. I'm hoping by mid summer she is asking to go if she still needs help with her undies and pants but I don't think she will or she takes herself off.

I really didn't expect TT to be this easy... Well it is so far lol. Extra proud that she's doing it before her 3yr old cousin too! Oh and when I was in the shower she was hanging round in the bathroom with me as she does and she told me toilet asked for help with her pj bottoms and I took her nappy off she climbed up on the toilet and went!

Will read the rest of the thread when I shouldn't be studying

He tells us when he wees on the floor and when hes going poos and he discovered the potty though at first he'd just sit on it for 30 seconds then cheer for himself lol but then he did a wee in it and it kinda clicked so we've left him without pants and we're directing him to the potty every 30-40 minutes. Hes now got the hang of sitting there til he does wees which is sometimes 1 minute sometimes 15 then he gets up points and claps lol so its quite easy. DS1 trained the same way so I'm pretty stoked since I did wonder if this time would be alot harder. If we don't remember to direct him to the potty he'll run into another room and wee on the floor then come back and tell us but we're only a couple of weeks into it and hes not even 2 yet. DD is 2 and 8 mths and has been TT'd trained since last summer, age 2, for day time. I've always put her in a cloth or pull up nappy for naps and nighttime though. I'm using pullups at night in the hopes she'll be able to start going toilet herself at night, but usually I help her. She usually starts to cry at night until I go in, and she says she needs to go toilet, most of the time she goes wees, unless she's done it too many times close together. The problem is that on some nights lately she is doing this up to 4 times a night, and like tonight, did it from when I put her to bed at 7, 4 times before 7.30pm. I guess that might be a way of delaying sleep but she is usually a very good sleeper. The middle of the night stuff is tiring though. (I always take her when I go to bed at about 10pm and she goes wees then) I guess if she's not sleeping well she may wake up and think she needs to go but she's quiet usually so I can only assume she is sleeping okay. Her door is usually closed as we have a small house, but maybe I need to open it, put her in knickers and leave her to it...then we'll have issues of her getting up and staying up I guess...what do you think? I get really tired on those nights she wants to go lots. She seems tireder in the day too after those nights. She doesn't say it hurts or anything...

I started to let him wear the undies over his nappy (his choice) and then I ran them all in on the sewing machine so now they fit him. Apparently there are cloth pull ups for about $10 at babycity which you might find fit smaller toddlers or can be altered to fit, I'm going to check them out. I think the fitted toilet set is a hood idea but make sure you get a step that's high enough and wide enough to reach the toilet easily and be able to put feet on while sitting down. You may also want to wait for a few months for another growth spurt though.

Fun fun fun

She is very regular, going the same time each day. She knows that dolly does wees on the potty. I'd like to start giving it a crack around 20 months if she keeps making this kind of progress. Plus I'd like her trained by the time the new baby arrives at 26 months. (I was trained at 23 months, so seams reasonable)

The problem we have is although she is bright and aware, she is physical very small - around 8kg at pinch. She doesn't fit pull ups and doesn't even fit on the potty, so is reluctant to sit up on it as it isn't comfortable.

Has anyone else had a small toddler with these issues? What can I do? Would one of those toilet seats that sit on the loo be better?

We 'ran out of nappies' yesterday so she's in pullups now.
She'll happily sit on the potty/toilet but refuses to do anything on them.
Tonight after the bath I told her if she sat on the potty and did her wees with her pullup on she's get a yoghurt raisin and it worked! So far I haven't actually managed to git my DS to do poos or wees on the potty, and most of the time these days if you ask him if he wants to use the potty he just says "no". Even though it's too late, it's helped her understand what's happening and that wees go in the potty. We had no wee accidents yesterday, but 2 poo ones (one in knickers, and one she ALMOST made the potty, so didn't make a big deal about it).

Good luck!

She was really good in the morning and then would usually have accident after accident in the afternoon between approx 3 & 7 pm which drove me crazy. I just kept leaving her bare bum outside and consistantly putting her on the potty or the toilet and she got better at recognising the sensation and catching it before she went. She now asks to go several times a day and has been dry now for two days in a row. I think they need some practice and to get some hits on the potty to be able to recognise it so if I were you I would keep going and eventually he should be able to recognise the sensation and ask to go. We have been going now for 3 weeks and DD had a bad first week but things have got better and better since. Just keep at it with him - it sounds like he has the right idea he just needs some practice.

ETA to add that the fact that he looks down before he goes is a good sign. He can feel something going on down there! He just probably can't connect the feeling to what is going to happen next and needs some practice at that.

Edited by Shelt

    Author: missyb
Subject: 5363
Posted: 30 January 2011 at 8:28pm

Hey guys,

I am just after some thoughts on TTíng J who is 2 next week, adn I thought I would ask in here instead of starting another TT thread.

Anyway, J seems to have a strong interest in the toliet, and would choose to wear undies over nappies. If you ask him where wees/poos go he tells you the toliet.

Over the last moth or so I have just gone with the flow and asked him on and off if he wanted to go to the toliet. A few times he has said yes and we have gone and he has done wees-great. This is more so when we are out and about, rather than at home. Any successess have always been done with major praise and a sticker (thomas the tank engine is the best form of bribery)

Anyway, today I decided to bite the bullet and have him in undies. I took him to the toliet every 1/2 hr and he did 3 wees this morning and was completley dry until lunchtime when we went out. I put him on the toilet again when we were out, to which he did wees again, only to poo his nappy 5minutes later (no big deal).

He was pretty much dry when I got him up from his nap and made it to about 3.30pm before he had an accident. So a pretty darn good attempt, but I will admitt that he didn't drink as much as he usually would this morning.

Then after the accident we had 3 more until dinner, despite me still putting him on the loo every 30min or so. But he still did do 2 wees.

The thing is, that he knows when he is going, cause when he is on the loo you can see him pushing it out so to speak and when I haven't caught him in time he looks down before he wees. So he is aware of what is going on. But he has never told me he needs to go, so am I wasting my time, and am i better to wait until he can tell me that he does need to go.

I know it is only day 1 so I can't expect too much but I am just a little unsure on what I should do from here. Carry on like we are and hope that he gets it or just wait a bit longer.

Anyway, if anyone has any advice I would much appriecate it, and good luck with everyones TT adventures.

I was going with the approach of he'll just do it when he's ready. I was right!.
Last week I was in the kitchen and he was nappyless, and he said 'Ryan done wee's on the potty' I didn't believe him, and sure enough he'd done it. NO pressre or anything. SInce then he's when he's had his nappy off will go on the potty. Except one evening when he wanted his car with him and got up to get it and went on the floor. But thats ok.

Monday he did one before bed. Tuesday (yesterday) he went before his arvo nap, then i put a nappy on him sent him to bed when he got up I took his nappy off, it was dry, and he sat on the potty and did a wee, and was nappiless for the rest of the day and did 2 more we's after that. THis mornign he's done 3 wee's since 7.30.
His night nappy was quite wet but not as wet as it can be!

So where to now?
We are having a day at home so I'm plannign on trying a whole day with no nappy and just let him do it. I'm a bit nervous about the poo though. He does one a day and it varies on when. I think then tomorrow if it goes smoothly we'll try the undies.

Oh and I'm running out of marshmello's. and he has filled 2 lines of 10 on his star chart just for wee's.

I did throw her in knickers to see how she went and she was going well but I had to insist she go to the toilet and she quickly got the hump and would hold on and not go on the toilet and then have accidents instead. I put her in pull ups after that and decided to stop pressuring her. She woke up 2 days ago and just decided to wear her knickers and has been taking herself to the loo since. Stubborn by nature it seems she wanted to do it on her terms but I am so happy now and wish I didn't stress it so much before.

For the last 2 weeks Clodagh has started going 'psssssss' then sniffing furiously and rubbing her nose whenever she has done poos....at first I thought it was a conincidence cos she's 'only' 15 months old but nope it's a definate acknowledgement on her part that she has done a poo and wants to be changed (cos she then tries to take her pants off!).

I guess I want to know where to from here? We have a potty and she's very interested in it and also in DF and I going to the loo. She makes all the sounds hehe but I don't want to force her IYKWIM? But I maybe had a goal to follow her lead and perhaps by January or so (she'll be 19 months then), she might be a bit dry during the day? Is that unrealistic? My mum decided that Amy should have them as she was totally not co-operating with TT at age 3+. I was just going to put her into the cheapest nappies I could find but no, it had to be pull ups. She now admits that I was right and Amy loved the pull ups and never once *pulled them up*.

We did TT boot camp in January with both girls> Sophie had never had much nappy off time and it was her first go in undies. She knew when her poos were coming but not wees. After 2 days in undies she started to know. We are still having good and bad days - mostly bad when she is a bit sick or when her molars are playing up, but I think that after trying both ways (waiting until they are ready and cold turkey) that cold turkey is better.

He got to the stage that he was so proud of doing it on his own that he stopped asking for stickers & "pollypops" - well that was until the other day when we bought some new "pollypops"..(mini candycanes) but its only one a day im sure he will soon forget again. Heaps of praise & letting him choose some big boy undies did help. & patience! crikey ive never been so patient in my whole life lol but its so worth it! Tristen wasnt interested in nappy pants we only used them at night I just stocked up on the undies & went from there. Oh he only pooed his undies once & SO didnt like it hasnt happened again. He also comes & tells us if hes had "an assident" We now have the other extreme that he likes to pee anywhere & everywhere & do "bigones" in places like the bucket
also i think each child has different bladder control I was putting him on every 1/2 to hour & nothing but then decided to trust him to tell me when he needs to go he can go several hours without needing to go sometimes...

Edited by Phat_Cat

He knows when he needs to go though, and has awesome bladder control (usually goes 2 hours without peeing). Will he eventually just start going on the toilet seeing as he hates it when he soils himself? Today the only times he went was when he was napping, and one accident, so it was hard to remind him to go!

We had two days of accidents then once he did go we were away laughing. Apart from yesterday hes done everything on there -he does get a bit upset with poos just the sensation i think but i sit with him and reassure him and we get there. The wiggles wipes are great as well, & ive involved him in as much as possible (ie choosing his undies and toilet seat). Yesterday was a bad day full of accidents but I gave him an incentive today of having a "present" if he kept his undies dry until bathtime and it worked. He stopped asking for stickers (for wees) and a lollie (for poos) so have left it as it is for now. The last couple of nights hes been completely dry over night but i think thats more of a fluke at the moment.

No worries there but when he wets he then comes crying to us. Sometimes he says toilet other times he gets really distressed. We ask him if he wants to go toilet and he also asks to go but nothing happens. Also he doesnt like sitting on the little toilet seat hes starts crying even with some distraction ie singing of songs etc and begs to "get off" then promptly does wees inhis undies and gets upset. We have told him that once he does wee, wees on the toilet he can have a present but still no joy...

Any suggestions?

Edited by Phat_Cat
