Well this year i asked Amelia what sort of cake she would like me to make her for her third birthday , Her very thought out and straight to the point response was " Mum , i want a really BIG pink cake with ice-creams and lollipops on it . .... so this is my interpritation of her request .... shes the brains behind it , it was her idea ....

caliandjack will you be carving it into a shape? If so, you'll need a 'heavy' cake so it'll hold the shape (I always use my choc cake recipe, I can send it to you if you like )

I'm an amateur and have never worked with fondant before but I really wanted to make my son's birthday cake myself!

Here's how his Dr Seuss cake turned out, and a link to a step by step on how I made it. I did use chopsticks through the bottom cake with a cake board on top to handle the weight of the top cake.

here is mr ted! the cake i made for amelias 2nd birthday today , was a great hit and she just LOVED it . i tried to mimic it off her best friend in the world (mr ted) who she takes everywhere with her :) thanks so much for the advice ladies i was really happy with how he tunred out

MamaT, yes my youngest 2 birthdays are 9 days apart (21st June & 30th June) but that's not the worst of it.... my b'day is the 12th June & DP's is the 19th June!!!

Julz - I used ready made fondant for DS's cake (the train one of the previous pages), it was really easy to use and I don't mind the taste at all either.

Deez, I would put each cake on their own cardboard 'plate', ice them individually, put skewers/doweling into the bottom layer (where the top layer will sit) then put the top layer on. The doweling will stop the top layer sinking into your bottom layer!
You can use a layer of butter icing as glue for the fondant to stick to.

You could get some skewers and put them in the bottom cake where you want the top one to sit, then, for lack of a better term, impale the smaller cake on top...?

Hello, i have been directed here to get some advise lol. I am going to make my sons birthday cake next month for his 5th birthday - Jungle theme. Not doing anything overly hard but just wanted to know about icing with foundant and attaching to cakes together 8inch on top of a 10inch. Would cover both cakes first in foundant and then place the 8 on top of the 10...and then how do i stop it from falling off?? Thanks.

Yay for the 'new' kitchen & Yay for re-scheduling the party

MrsEmma, no that one's just normal white fondant. I'm planning the MMF for DD's cake in a couple of weeks

Rarrarrar, to make red you'll just need a/some White Icing from the Supermarket (like Royalty or Pettinice in the baking isle) and some gel tint, adding a little bit at a time until you get the colour you're after (it will be VERY messy!!! so you might like to wear some disposable gloves!). You can also buy pre coloured fondant off TradeMe or places like Spotlight.

Well after todays shocks im VERY VERY VERY glad im moving to the better side of town , i managed to change the party date to thethe following weekend too so hopefully i will still be able to make the cake and ill be making it my nice new kitchen with all stainless steel apliances (flash for me , my kitchen at the moment is like 30yrs old lol ) .

Cake turned out perfectly, thanks to Bizzy and her idea of the local party supplies store and their icing whitener!! Excuse the wobbly edges, DP took the older 2 out so I could concentrate, only we didnt count on the youngest waking up as soon as he left, leaving me with about 10-15mins to decorate it!

I really appreciate 3xmummy and mrsemmas advice about the cake and marshmellow fondant but i just found out im moving house ( finally moving out of the east side of chch and will finally have sewerage after being without for 9months!!!!)  and the move just so happens to be the day after dd's birthday and 2 days before her party so i really dont think i am going to get the chance to try and make her cake now  altho i may end up changing her party date , we will see , depends if the place im hiring is available a different weekend .when it rains it pours!

here is the cake I made today for DD's 7th Bday. Its pretty simple but what she wanted. It also has that glitter stuff ontop but it soaked straight into the chocolate icing that I didn't let set first cos I was in a hurry lol.

Yes, I just use cutters. I bought them off Trade Me.

The butterflies I cut out of fondant & shape them over a rolling pin (or similar) & leave them to dry. They keep their shape when they're dry. I see now you can get waaay more detailed butterfly cutters than I have here.... I might have to invest in some

For the flowers I use various shapes of cutters to make them interesting, 'gluing' them together with a dab of butter icing.

Yep I use either the Royalty or the Pettinice Icings from the Supermarket

Wow, fantastic cake 3xmummy!!

Julz85 I second using 3xmummy's cake recipe, thats what I used for DS's cake and it filled the tin beautifully and tasted awesome! I also used a buttercream icing between the cake and fondant to make it stick.

I'll get the MMF recipe on today, I promise!! Sorry i havent been in here in a while! I'll post the recipe tonight when I'm on the PC and not my phone.

DS's cake was flat so it was easy to cover, but the MMF is light and I rolled it relatively thin so a shaped cake should be ok as long as it has good supports in it maybe. It would need to be quite sturdy so you can press the fondant into the nooks and crannies. questions: how hard is it to cover a shaped cake in fondant or marshmellow fondant ?

 i want to do a 3d bear for amelias birthday alot like the one on page 11 of Tylers birthday cake (TheKelly), but i want very smoothe icing rather than the buttercream version , i also want to make it multi coloured (im going to attempt to do amelias FAVOURITE teddy , he is light brown with a rainbow pastel colored tummy and is her best friend , she doesnt go anywhere without him ) i was just wanting tips for using fondant and also what is the best way to colour it ? I have gel colourings so im guessing i would just put a very small amount to make a pastel colour ? as they do go very bright or would i ave to buy specific pastel colours ?
