Josiah used to do this, in a tantrum. It wasn't pretty, but better than the action it replaced - throwing himself backwards from upright. We used to either put a hand in the way or put him in his cot where he couldn't hurt himself. He's mostly stopped now. yeah i meant to also mention that when rhi teeths she does this as well....as i said its something to do with relieving the pressure/pain that is in their heads...

My boydoes this too personally I don't know how it doesn't hurt him. He does cry however when he is tired and he does it. Rhiannon use to do this heaps as well, and only does it occasionly now, BUT when she was doing it we thought it was just for attention, but then i read somewhere that sometimes kids bang there heads on things to relief the pressure of having sore ears.

Rhiannon has never shown up having an ear infection, but when i took her to the doctor after a couple of head banging incidents it turned out that she had the tail end of an inner ear infection...so its possible that Joshys ears are sore and hes just trying to relieve the pain.

Benjy does it too. He does it deliberately but it doesn't seem to be attention seeking or as part of a tantrum. I think he's just experimenting.

Anastasia started the same thing bout this age, she would also throw herself on the ground to do it while throwing a tanty. Apart from a few bruises she has come thru it without any permanent damage. If we were close enough to her when she was doing it would put our hand between her head & whatever she was hitting but you can't always be in arms reach from them. I think they are just exploring different reactions & feelings like with babies when they put everything in their mouths.
Anastasia has stopped now so it might be just something Joshua will get sick of doing

I've seen some kids do it as a way of seeking attention... I don't know if this is what Josh seems to be doing, but in the event that it is, ignoring the behaviour? Or calmly and quietly removing objects or Josh himself away from whatever he is banging his head on
... and then hope like hell he grows out of it soon! Over the last couple of weeks or so Joshua has been banging his head on things - walls, doors, floors, toys.... I'm getting a bit concerned about it.
