My older boys know about periods (age 10, 9) and even my 5year old has an idea. I have found that with ads on tv for tampons/pads etc they do ask very early. I just say that the special place that the baby grows in inside a lady gets ready every month and if a baby doesnt grow in there that month the cosy lining comes out as blood. They are happy with that. Mind you my 3 older boys were at the birth of their youngest brother and so we are pretty open and honest about the process! They will be at the birth of their sister soon too

The problem with Mona was that puberty had started at about 7 1/2, we had to buy her first bra at 8 because she was getting teased at school. But she was so unprepared emotionally, and also her hormones were all over the place so she would have really heavy periods that lasted for weeks and she got really anaemic, and then she wouldn't have one at all for a few months. Public Health tried to force us to put her on the Pill to regulate it but we refused, I was worried about it affecting her fertility later on if she starts the Pill so young, and also the whol "licence to have sex" thing - she might think that being on the Pil l makes it ok. My brother is 12 and I think he must know about them. (With two sisters and 3 step-sisters I would hope he's figured out why we get unreasonably grumpy every few weeks!)

I didn't get mine until I was 13, my sister got hers at 12, but Mum got hers at 9. Thats why I'll tell Kiya when she's 10 - so she's prepared.

A girlfriend of mine at high school first got hers at 9. Mona got her first period on her 9th birthday. I took her to a paediatric endocrinologist to make sure everything was ok as sometimes early puberty can be a sign of a tumour, but after a CT scan etc. everything was normal. The specialist said it is just diet and the way we are developing, but he seemed to think the chicken hormones thing was a bit of a storm in a teacup. Either way, I felt so sorry for Mona, it's such a hard thing to cope with at 9. yep - these days they get it so much earlier too because of lots of different things - better nutrition and a whole lot of hormonal stuff too. My Mum said a good guideline for when to have "the talk" - at least the technical side - with a little girl is to look at when you got your first period, when your sisters got their first, and when your mum got her first, then use the average age as a guide.

I can't actually remember talking about periods, I just always 'knew' so I must have been told somewhere along the line, but I definitely remember the birds and the bees, I was about 8.

I remember being about 5 when I learnt about periods, I was like Kiya I suppose and just followed mum into the bathroom all the time etc. I come from a family where we really speak openly about everything but when I think about having to tell my wee one things... Kiya knows about periods, just the basics and that I'll tell her more when she's a bit older and can understand it a bit better.

It got to the point during the pregnancy where I'd go to the bathroom and she'd follow me (no privacy with a little kid!) and ask what I was doing, and if I was bleeding still, and did I need my tampons, and... by that stage I was ready to yell at her until she left the room! lolol. I read somewhere that the average 2/3/4 yr old asks up to 500 questions a day.

Maya has entered the delighful "questions" stage, where every second thing that comes out of her mouth is a question. Yesterday it was "Where is that bus going" "Why is that man wearing a singlet like Daddy's" "Why are you cleaning up my toys?" and so on and so on. Exhausting, but I am kind of stoked, she is beginning to question how her world works.
She is also learning about responsibility for her actions. Yesterday I asked her to clean up her toys and she said "But I didn't make the mess Mama" And I said "Yes you did" to which she responded "You did, Mama made the mess!"
