Cots are one of those big-ticket items for baby’s room that’s likely to be the starting block for setting up the nursery. So you’ll be looking for the most stylish you can afford but at the same time keeping an eye on functionality. Do you want it on castors or with drawers underneath for storage?
There are also safety issues to consider, even though all cots sold in New Zealand (including on TradeMe) must meet the safety standard AS/NZS 2172:2003. Even so, particularly if you’re buying second-hand, says NZ Consumer, look out for sharp edges, broken or wobbly bars or bolts and screws not firmly in place.
When buying a mattress make sure it fits snugly with no gaps that would allow your child to become trapped. If you’re buying new, most cots come without mattresses so it pays to check what size mattress you’ll need.
